Face painting has been part of the arts and


culture of China and Japan’s theatrical and
festival presentations.

Peking Opera Face Painting

One of the largest Chinese opera forms is the


Peking opera. This has created many firsts in
their culture.

This presents dramatic plays and figures


emphasizing the four artistic methods.

shows astuteness and fierceness.
5. GREEN shows the character is violent,
impulsive and lacks restraint.
6. YELLOW tells the audience that the
character is cruel, ambitious or sly.
7. WHITE also indicates that the
character is evil and hypocritical and
commonly used by powerful villain.
8. GOLD and SILVER exhibit character of
a good or a demon. This can also be
associated with ghost or a spirit. It also
symbolizes mystery.

KABUKI FACE PAINTING


Japan is internationally recognized as one of
the leading manufacturers of cosmetics.
Historically, face make up is an important
part of their culture. They are known for
kabuki makeup or kesho. This is a face
painting art that elucidates the performers’
own role.
MUKIMI-GUMA (subtle lip rouge and eye
highlights) this makeup styles are worn with
specific character or role in play.

Just like Peking Opera Kabukis colors in face


paintings also represents certain meanings.

Art of Korean Masks


Just like in other countries, the art of Korean
masks known as TAL or TA”L has its
historical origin and religious significance.

Masks were also


used for shamanistic rites and were kept
within temples where they were honored with
offerings. By the 12th century, the masks
became part of elaborate dances and dramas.

the idea that the wearer has two fathers, Mr.
Red and Mr. White
3. Dark-faced mask - indicates that the
character was born of an adulterous mother
Some masks have moving parts like winking
or shifting eyes and moving mouths. To
further add to the lifelike features of the
masks, black fabric is draped from the top of
the mask over the wearer's head to simulate
hair.

Traditionally, the chinese funerals include the
