What is a
computer ?
A computer is an electronic device that
manipulates information, or data. It has the ability to
store, retrieve, and process data. You may already
know that you can use a computer to type
documents, send email, play games, and browse
the Web. You can also use it to edit or create
spreadsheets, presentations, and even videos.

Origin of the
word 'Computer'
The word "Computer" Computer is derived from a Latin word
“computare” which means to “to calculate” , “to count” ,
“to sum up” or “to think together”. So, more precisely the
word computer means a "device that performs

IN HISTORY
1896 - The Tabulating Machine, created
by Herman Hollerith, read and sorted
data from punched cards

1942 - The Atanasoff Berry

Computer (ABC), which was
constructed at Iowa State
by Professor John Atanasoff
and Clifford Berry, weighed
750 pounds. It included
3,000 bits (0.4K) of
memory.
1944 – " The Mark I "
was constructed by
Harvard’s Professor
Howard Aiken – it
stood 50 feet long and
8 feet tall.

1946 - The world's first

electronic computer, "
the ENIAC (Electronic
Numerical Integrator
and Computer)" ,
debuted. It was 50 by
30 feet and weighted
30 tons. The computer
had to be rewired to
carry out different
tasks because there
was no software to
reprogram it.
1951 - Remington Rand debuted the
UNIVAC (punch card technology). It
was the first commercially
successful computer with over 40
systems sold. It made use of
magnetic cassettes with a 1MB
capacity.

1969 - The ARPAnet (Advanced

Research Projects Agency network),
which later became the Internet,
started as a military computer
network.

1976 - The CRAY 1, the first electronic

digital computer in history, included a
64-bit processor running at 75 MHz,
making it the fastest CPU available at
the time. The Apple computer was
created by Steve Wozniak and Steve
Jobs in the same year. A computer
mouse and a graphical user interface
were initially introduced by Apple.
1978 - The age of personal
computers began . Around the world,
new and established businesses
created a variety of desktop
computer models.

1990 - The World Wide Web, a

networked hypertext system,
was created by Tim Berners-Lee.

1996 - PDAs (Personal

CONCLUSION
In summary, we use servers and the Internet for a variety of
purposes and utilize desktop and laptop computers for work,
play, and at home. Today, this vast collection of computer
connections has increased our resources and given us fast
access to nearly any recorded data.
