INTRODUCTION
Caisson C12 is in need of repair and Atkins have been contracted to provide a permanent solution. The
permanent solution comprises of 8 clamp sections which are to be installed below the Spider deck at
EL+14.000m. All clamp sections are to be cross-hauled using under-deck steelwork to provide lift points,
as can be seen in the sketch below.
Reference
DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
Existing under-deck steel beams will be checked for combined global and local stresses induced during
cross-haul. The beam will be assessed under resulting vertical, lateral, and axial forces acting on the
bottom flange. As such, four locations on the beam cross-section will be analysed for combined stresses:
toe bending at the bottom of the beam; root bending at the bottom of the beam; web bending at bottom
root radius; and web bending at top root radius.
ASSUMPTIONS
The following assumptions have been considered as part of the design:
Type VI U.N.O. Conservatively plate girders have also been taken as Type VI
Fy = 355 N/mm2
LOADING
Basic Loads have been calculated using weights from Atkins drawings. The following figures and factors
have been added to calculate the design weight:
The maximum component weight is 757kg based on information provided by Atkins, liftpoints will be
checked for 1Te. The worst case crosshaul is at liftpoint B.
4 pieces will be assembled and held on 2 No. restraint rigging points. The combined weight will be circa
1500kgs and conservatively assumed to be held on a single restraint point, G.
Beams used to support the clamps are required to be checked under cross-haul induced loading. The
beams will be analysed under the weight of the heaviest component that each Lift Point will be subject to
(refer to Loading section above). Two load cases will be considered: 100/0 and 50/50 load split between
lift points.

CHECK LIFT POINT 1A
Lift Point 1A is located along the cantilevered 914x305UB that runs in an east-west direction 5500mm
south of Gridline 7. The cross haul operation is along the length of the beam so no transverse effects will
be involved. Note that this lift point will not be subject to Load Condition 3.

CHECK LIFT POINT B
Lift Point B is located along the 305x165x54 UB that runs in an East-West direction 2900mm North of
Gridline 30. The clamps are cross-hauled from lift point B to lift point D in a direction diagonal to the span
of the beam.

CHECK LOAD CONDITION 2
Load Condition 2 occurs when the load is halfway between two lift points, so the applied load has a
vertical component and also one or two horizontal components, depending on the direction of cross-haul.
Assume that the existing beam is 5% utilised. As the lift point is a temporary load, an allowable overstress API RP 2A-WSD
of ⅓ can be adopted.
