CHAPTER 2 – MATERIALS AND METHODS
Tomato
Bitter gourd
Pea plant
Ginger
Green chilli
Approximately, I brought ten grow bags from the shops and Krishi
bhavan.
And also I cultivate these crops in small area of my home.
2
Approximately, its about 40/50sqft.
Tomato ,pea plant and green chiili are cultivated in grow bags and others
and in ground.
CROP SEASON
Tomato
The crop season of the tomato are predominantly summer crops, but it
can be cultivated throughout the year. They are usually planted in march
and April in our country because of our climate changes. The
temperature range of the tomato plants are between 55 and 85 degrees.
Bitter gourd
The time of sowing of bitter gourd is from January to march for summer
season crop, June – July for rainy season crops in the plains and march
to June un the hills. They are usually planted in rainy season. The
temperature range of 24 – 27 degree Celsius is considered as optimum
for the growth of the vines.
Pea plant
The pea plants are usually planted in winter season. It should be need a
cool climate. Pea seeds are tolerate soil temperatures as low as 40
degrees Fahrenheit ,although their ideal temperature for germination is
around 75 degrees Fahrenheit .some of tolerates soil and air
temperatures as low as 28 degrees fahrenheit ,but this depends on the
plant’s stage of development.
Ginger
The season of the ginger from may to July approximately .so, I haven’t
3
any risk for the cultivation of these crops. Its always grows up. Also it
can be planted well in during the middle of February or early march. The
optimum soil pH growth of ginger is between 6.0 and 6.5 and the plant
requires a minimum temperature of 15.5 degree Celsius.
Green chilli
Chillies are actually perennial plants. They haven’t a proper season. But,
it produce more in spring season. January and February are the perfect
months to start sowing chilli pepper seeds indoors. It needs also a good
or steady temperature of 25 to 28 degree Celsius to germinate .
I had a good weather when I planted the plants. However, the intensity of
the intermittent rains was somewhat affected. Because, it’s a rainy
reason. However, the plants all grew well and got good yield.
MANURES
First, I collected good moist fertile soil. After that , I grind the dry
charcoal and add a little cow dung with it. It was mixed both and filled
about three-quarters of a grow bag. I watered the soil with some water.
A little is enough because the soil is already moist. All this is done to
increase the fertility of the soil and to get a good yield. Later, I planted
the seedlings of tomato, pea and green chilli in the grow bags I had
prepared. Bitter gourd and ginger are planted in ground. After that,
several fertilizers were added according to its growth.
4
BIO- PESTICIDES
was very helpful for pest control and also rhubarb leaves ,chilli peppers,
garlic etc are good for these. Rice water with a small pinch of turmeric
powder was good. these mixtures are sprayed out to the seedlings,
leaves and products. I used these types of natural biopesticides for pest
control.
LAND PREPARATION
I used 40/50 sqft for organic farming. Even though all was planted in the
backyard. Tomatoes, green chilli and pea plant are planted in grow bags
and bitter gourd , ginger are in ground. Pea and bitter gourd are planted
from both side of the land . A tent was set up in the middle of the both.
The veins of the plants are creeping in these tents. Green chilli, tomato,
ginger are placed even when receiving good light and rain. It was helpful
to grew up well. These seedlings are planted 7-8 distance from pea and
bitter gourd. Because, the shade of the tents was decreasing the light to
these plants. These plants have more light and little water.
SEEDLING/PLANTING
Tomatoes, green chilli and pea are sowed in grow bags. So, I already
collected and prepare good fertile soil for these seedlings. Bitter gourd
5
and ginger are in ground soil. First time I sprayed water everyday in each
of these seedlings. After a few days, I watered to it alternatively. Bitter
ground and ginger was planted in better and good fertile part of the
ground soil. I used many natural pesticides for pest control. It was home
made pesticides. Bitter gourd and pea plant had more space because it
have veins and creeping in the tents. It was watered frequently because
of the intensity of sunlight.

CHAPTER 5 – COST- BENEFIT ANALYSIS
The materials was used for these cultivation or organic farming are cow
dung, bone meal etc . it was collected from krishi bhavan and near
agricultural shops. The seedlings of plants and sprayers for pesticide
was expenditure . cutting scissors, baskets had a small amount of
money. Manures such as cow dung, bone meal etc was brought of Rs
120/- .so total amount for manure is Rs 240/- approximately. The price
of the seedlings are different for each of it. At the total amount for the
seedlings are Rs 180/- . some of them are I collected from neighbours
home. The equipments when I used like sprayers, scissors etc are Rs
250/-. So, the total expenditure for my organic farming is Rs 565/-

MOOC ON ORGANIC
FARMING M G University
Submitted by
Aiswarya Raj

Assumption College, Chanaganasseri
Abstract
• Agriculture become a high investing and low Yielding due to
controlled use of synthetic chemicals which are becoming harmful to
the echo system. To protect our eco system organic farming is well
practiced without using harmful chemicals they are replaced by
biofertilizers biopesticides etc .
Chapter 1
Introduction
• Mahatma Gandhi University introduced MOOC Massive open online course
on organic farming a project for 1st semester students. Such a project
initiative is to to make understand the need for organic farming that
contributes to the better acknowledgement of sustainability and thereby
biodiversity. Awareness on organic farming is an urgent need of the how
was it provides the choice of a healthy life . Organic farming is an
integrated farming system that strives for sustainability. It is much in vogue
because of its health benefits as well as the avoidance of chemical usage
and ongoing changing patterns of food consumption and lifestyle. Iam
Aiswarya Raj, first year B A History student of Assumption College,
Chanaganasseri and iam presenting this report to explain the output I have
received from organic farming.
Chapter 2
Materials and methods
• Crops selected
• 1) Green Chilli
• 2)Eternal egg plant
• 3)Brinjal
• 4)Aubergine
• 5)spinach
• SOURCE OF SEEDS
• All seeds were bought by krishi bhawan.
•
Area or no of grow bags
• Out of this five, five were planted in the backyard where it was
possible to receive six to eight hours direct sunlight and fertile soil
Everything was well planted and had enough the yield was better
than expected the factors contributed to their yield.
Manure
• Dried cow dung was mostly used as it was best for organic farming.
We could obtain it from someone we know so it didn’t cost anything.
Cow dung powder used in growing plants can help to provide the
nutrients needed for the healthy growth of the greens. Along with
this dried cow dung bio waste was also used for its nourishment
which was available with no much effort but effective enough.A
fermented mixture of Jaggery, cow dung and curd was also used in
the course of time. Its use add much benefit along the way.
Bio-pesticides
• Bio-pesticides was used for better yield and pestcontrol.Neem oil was
used.Neem oil has a dual purpose as both a pesticide and fungicide. It
works on arthropod pests that often eat your vegetables. Its also
controls the common fungi that grows on vegetables plants including
mildviews.Biological research into soil and soil organisms has proven
to beneficial to organic farming.Varieties of bacteria and fungi break
down chemicals, plant matter and animal waste into productive soil
nutrients. In turn, they produce benefits of healthier yields and more
productive soil for future crops.
Land preparation
• 150 sq mts was used for organicfarming.Even though all was planted
in the backyard. Green Chilli was planted in a very fertile part of the
soil which had a better water holding capacity as well. For brinjal,
sowing should be done thinly in line spaced at 5-7cm distance. Sweds
are sown at depth of 2-3 cm and covered with a fine layer of soil
followed by light watering and water bed should then be covered
with the dry or grass of sugarcane leaves to maintain required
temperature and moisture.
Seedling/Planting
Brinjal was sowed along in double the quantity of seeds in bed
formation. It prevented the meanace created by ants and other
insects.After one week,seeds sprouted.Water was regularly
sprayed.After two weeks,water was only in alternative days.After 3
weeks we are able to yield.Green chilli was plants in the best time to
grow and get yield. We planted them into the ground and maintained
enough space required between the seed.It was watered frequently
and we’ll placed to get 5-6hours of sunlight.Spinsch was sowed in the
same of brinjal.Abrinjal.Aubergine and eternal egg plant were planted
in the same type.

motive. The whole thing was supposed for homely purposes.Even
though we encountered minor issues,we wereable to yield better
than we expected.Chilli grew and produced a great amount of
products and stl yielding. All other items were produced.During the
process we managed to great effect in different stages of growth cost
effectively too.Bio waste was available which helped the growth of
these plants.During this pandemic w could use these vegetables
without any chemical usage and definitely it adds to the health of all
