the Plan
Given the following pictures of substances let the students determine which are elements and
which are compound:
1. Gold is an element
Awareness 2. Copper is an element
3. Silver is an element
4. Salt is a compound made up of sodium and hydrogen
5. Water is a compound made of hydrogen and oxygen

Guide the students in performing the activity on Water, “Wat-er You Made of?
Activity (Refer to page 37-39 of Learners Material)
Observe safety precautions in performing the activity

What is electrolysis?
Electrolysis is process that separates components of water. It decomposed water into hydrogen
Analysis
and oxygen. Through the passage of electric current components of water may be separated
from each other.

How electrolysis separates oxygen and hydrogen from water?

With the 2 syringe, in a positive electrode is an oxygen gas that made the lighted stick burn
Abstraction more vigorously, thus oxygen shows the property of burning. While in a negative electrode,
hydrogen gas is collected this gave a popping sound when a glowing stick was thrust in it. In
which that sound comes from the rapid burning of hydrogen in the presence of air.

How does an element like oxygen and hydrogen differ from compounds such as water?
Compounds are substances that could be made up of two or more elements, while elements
are the simpler substance. Compounds can be separated through chemical process while
Application
elements cannot be separated. Each element has different set of properties. No two elements
have the same set of properties. When combine together to form compound, different
substance is formed which has properties that are distinctly different from the elements.
Identify if substance is an element or a compound?
1. Water - Compound
2. Sugar - Compound
Assessment
3. Ammonia - Compound
4. Copper - Element
5. Iron - Element
Assignment What are other ways that can separate components of compounds?
