ALERT SERVICE BULLETIN

PROTECTIVE MEASURE

OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT - Rescue Hoist System

Replacement of the overload clutch

Revision No. Date of issue

Revision 0 2015‐11‐20
Revision 1 2021‐02‐18

Summary:

With Revision 0 of this Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) the life limit of the overload clutch P/N
44301-220-xxx was extended to March 31, 2016. In addition, a Service Life Limit (SLL) for the
new overload clutch P/N 44301-398-xxx (Population 2) was introduced.

Reason for last Revision:

The SLL that was introduced with Revision 0 of this ASB was incorporated in the
ALS MBB-BK117 D-2 04-10-00. However, this SLL has been superseded by a mandatory
airworthiness inspection that has already been incorporated in the
ALS MBB-BK117 D-2 04-20-00. Consequently, Revision 1 of this ASB deletes the superseded
SLL. If Revision 0 of this ASB has already been accomplished, no further work is required due to
this revision.

Compliance:

It is mandatory to obey this ASB.

1.C REASON
During a maintenance check flight on a MBB-BK117 C-2 a dummy load of 552 lbs
(250 kg) was picked up in hover in order to conduct a “maximum load cycle” on the
rescue hoist. The cable reeled-out without further command from operator, causing
the test dummy load to impact the ground.
For this reason ASB MBB-BK117 D-2-85A-004 “Load Check Inspection according to
Alert Service Bulletin 44301-10-18 of the Goodrich Company” was issued.
With Revision 0 of this ASB the life limit of the overload clutch P/N 44301-220-xxx
was extended to March 31, 2016. A mandatory change to the new overload clutch
P/N 44301-398-xxx was needed before March 31, 2016. The new overload clutch
(Population 2) is assembled with improved process control.
