 A trolley?
“Xin chào,” said Lingo. Chef Son replied slowly, Xe đẩy ư? Không.
“Rất xin lỗi. Tôi không thể làm chiếc bánh sinh nhật được.”

A gherkin?
Dưa muối? Không.

Balloons?

Bóng bay? Không.

“I don’t understand,” said Lingo. “But let me guess. You want...”

Rất xin lỗi = I am sorry; bánh sinh nhật = birthday cake; Xe đẩy ư = a trolley; Dưa muối = a gherkin;

“Lò nướng của tôi bị hỏng,” explained Chef Son. Chef tapped his wrist. “Mấy giờ rồi? Chín giờ?
“Tôi có thể dùng nhờ lò nướng của bạn không?” Mười giờ?” he asked.

Lingo showed Chef

her watch.

Chef’s oven must be broken thought Lingo. “I know!

Let’s bake the cake together,” she said. “Mười một giờ? Bắt đầu thôi! Nhanh nào!”
They only had one hour until the party.
Lò nướng của tôi bị hỏng = my oven is broken; Mấy giờ rồi? = what time is it?; Chín giờ = nine o’clock; Mười giờ = ten o’clock;

 Chef Son and Lingo whizzed around the kitchen:
“Hãy đưa giúp tôi bơ, đường, trứng
và bột mì với,” said Chef.

Lingo wasn’t sure what those words meant, so she

just grabbed fish, coffee and onions instead.

Chef plopped butter, sugar, eggs and flour into a bowl. “So that’s “Cuối cùng là bột nở. Hai thìa đầy,” said Chef. Lingo guessed
what ‘bơ, đường, trứng và bột mì’ means!” laughed Lingo. ‘bột nở’ meant baking powder, but how much?

Before she could ask, Chef hurried away, saying,

“Xin lỗi, tôi cần đi vệ sinh.”

Lingo laughed, “I can guess

what ‘tôi cần đi vệ sinh’ means!”
“Tôi trộn, bạn trộn, nào ta cùng trộn,” said Chef and
together they began to mix the cake.

Tôi trộn = I mix; bạn trộn = you mix; nào ta cùng trộn = we mix Cuối cùng = finally; bột nở = baking powder; Hai thìa đầy = two spoonfulls;
Xin lỗi = excuse me; tôi cần đi vệ sinh = I need to do a wee wee
 I wonder if this is too much? thought Lingo as she added ten “Chuyện gì thế? Nó to quá!” said Chef.

She carefully put everything into the oven and before long, Lingo realised she had added too much baking powder.
a sweet cakey smell filled the kitchen. “Sorry,” she said sheepishly.

 They somehow got the cake out “I know what will make you feel better,”

cried Lingo. “Thảm họa!” wailed Chef.

They were running out of time.

“I’ve got it! Gunther loves hats, so
let’s turn the cakey mess into
a hat cake!” said Lingo.

First she shaped the cake, then

she filled balloons with icing.

Next came the best part: POP! POP! POP!

It was a messy job but in the end, the cake looked fantastic.
“Đỏ, cam, vàng, lục, lam. Tuyệt vời!” said Chef.

There was a knock at the door.

“Cánh cửa!” said Chef.
It was Gunther, and he was
wearing his special hat!

“Thank you. This makes me

feel so special,” said Gunther.
“You are special,” replied Lingo.

Gunther was thrilled with his cake.

 “Thổi nào!” said Chef. “Tôi ăn, bạn ăn, người đó ăn, họ ăn,” laughed Chef.
“Chúng ta ăn,” added Lingo proudly.
Gunther blew out all the
candles in one puff and
everyone tucked in.

The friends watched the sun go down. Baking a cake, helping a friend,
