Metal Rose

Construction
 Path

By: Gursimarjit Thandi

Before Starting Project make sure you
have the Following Safety Equipment.

▪ Eye Projection

▪ Hearing
protection
▪ Safety Gloves

Step: 1

▪ You can make the 8 individual pedals. The

first step is to mark where you are going to
make your cuts in order to make the
pedals, then you will mark the pedals with
the stencil. Then once you have marked
your cut lines you will use a park of tin
snips to cute one the lines that you have
marked.

Step: 2

▪ You will use a 1/8 drill bit to drill the

holes in the center of the pedals.
When you insert the drill bit int o
the jaws of the drill make sure that
the jaws aren't holding onto the
curve of the bit because it can ruin
or break the bit. Once you have set
up the drill take all of your material
over to one table and make sure
you have a scrap piece of wood to
let the drill bit drill into. Then you
want to hold the material with a
pair of vice grips to prevent it from
moving around.

Step 3:

▪ Moving on from drilling the holes and the 8 individual pedals now
you are going to use the wooden block mold to same and make
the pedal circular like a bowl. You will set your pedal on the top
of the mold and then with a hammer you will hit the center of
your pedal and it will start of change shape and turn into a
circular bowl. When you are hammering you pedals make sure
that you are wearing you eye and hearing protection as well as
safety gloves

Step: 4

After you have completed the steps

now you have to make a star for the
bottom of your rose. To begin with,
you will ask your teacher for another
piece of the sheet metal (5x8) or you
will have to cut on with the metal
shear. Now that you have your
piece, you will cut out the stencil and
use it to trace the shape. Make sure
that you are able to clearly see the
star shape.

Step 5:

▪ I used Tin Snips to curve the

five sides of the star, which
is going to go on the bottom
of the rose. Then I used a
1/8 drill bit to drill a hole in
the center of the star, so it
could go into the stem.

Step 6:

After I got the stem (12 inches),

I used pliers to bend the first 4-
5 centimeters of the stem into a
little circle shaped knot so that
the stem could hold the pieces
of the rose together. I also used
a different set of pliers to pull
the top of the stem so the knot
could get even smaller.

Step 7:

▪ Once you get the stem you will use a ruler to

measure and mark 12 inches on the welding rod.
Once you have marked a line you are going to use
slip joint or lineman pliers to cut the stem to the right
length. Then once that is done you are going to use a
hammer to shape and design the stem to you own
liking. When you are hammering the stem make that
you are hammering on an anvil. For this step you will
need to wear hearing protection, eye protection, and
safety gloves.

Step 8:

After I got the knot on the stem, I

used a hammer to flatten down
the stem and get it into a square
type of shape so that it looks
more like a real life rose stem. I
made sure to not hammer the
knot as much as the rest of the
stem because then it would
probably break the knot or make
it even smaller causing the
pieces of the rose falling right
through it.

Step: 9

Next, I started to first curve the first

lair of the pedal very close to each
other because I wanted the other
three lairs to curve in and the
edges to point out in a round
shape. Then I used two pairs of
pliers, one to hold the stem with
and the other to curve and bend
the leaf with. I tried my best to take
all of the eight pedals of the first lair
and use the pliers to hold them as
tight as possible.

Step 10:

Then after I was done with curving

all the of the pedals into the best
shape, I asked for Mr. Spiers
permission to use the sandblaster
and I used the clamp and
clamped the stem of the rose and
put in the sandblaster. Then I used
on the sandblasters and used the
safety equipment which included
safety glasses and hearing
protection. You don’t have to wear
gloves because the sandblaster
has gloves in it.

Step 11:

▪ After using the sandblaster, I got a

piece of metal which was about
three inched wide and 4 inches long.
Then I used a sharpie to outline the
two leaves that you need to add to
the stem of your rose. After outlining
the two leaves in the piece of metal,
I used tin snips to cut out the two
lefts and used a hammer and pliers
to get the two leaves into a better
shape so it could look better.

Step 12:

▪ Then after the cut the 2 pieces of

leaves, I turned on the sandblaster
and put on my safety glasses and
hearing protection, then proceeded to
sandblast both of my leaves. Before I
sandblasted the leaves, I used the
clamp and clamped both of my leaves
on the clamp. I had to sandblast the
leaves twice because the first time I
did it there were some spots on the
leaved that were not properly
sandblasted.

Step 13:

▪ After I was done with the leaves, I used

tape to put both of the leaves in the stem
of my rose because I was not allowed to
weld the leaves into the stem. I added a
few finishing touches to the rose, I
hammered the stem of the end and used
pliers to make the rose like more curved
so it can be easier to hold. I also used
pliers to curve the star on the bottom of the
rose a bit to the left because it was
bending down towards more on the left
side and was going through the knot since
the hole was too big.
