3 Practice: Making a Career for Myself Practice

College and Career Preparation I Name:
Date:

1. Think of the skills that come naturally to you. List two of these skills. For each
one, explain a situation in which you used the skill to reach a positive outcome. (6
points)

1. Public Speaking- I have used my knack for public speaking to

give me academic advantages. My teacher once offered 5
extra credit points for the person who could best perform a
reading of their essay and I got the points because of my skill.

2. Negotiating- I am an excellent negotiator because I am stubborn about

achieving what I want. I once argued with a teacher over a grade I
thought I deserved and we had a productive conversation that led to
me getting an A.

2. With what skills do you struggle the most? List two. For each one, explain a
situation in which there was a negative outcome because you lacked these skills.
(6 points)

1. Math- I am not very good at math and in 9th grade I was

given the choice to retake algebra because I was
struggling to understand the concepts.

2. Patience- I get can frustrated and that can cause me

to struggle with my patience. When helping my little
sister with her homework, we can get into huge fights
because I lack the ability to slow down and think of
things from her perspective.

3. Think about the 16 career clusters you've learned.

a. List two career clusters you believe align well with your strengths and explain
why.

b. Do you think any of your weaknesses will make it difficult for you to work in
either of these chosen fields? Briefly explain why. (5 points)

a. Health science because this includes psychology and counseling

which is the field I am most interested in because I am a good
listener and enjoy helping others. The second career cluster is
human services because while health science can help me become
a psychologist, human services include mental health counseling
which aligns with my strengths because I am compassionate and
an advocate for mental health. Being a mental health counselor will
allow me to help others to the best of my ability which is something
I am very passionate about.

b.
My empathy might be considered a weakness because for
both psychology and mental health counseling I will be
subjected to sensitive subjects that might be difficult to
hear. As a result I might empathize too greatly with my
patients and it may prevent me from doing my job to the
best of my abilities.

4. Think about what type of education you will need to pursue after high school to
enter the career fields in which you are interested. Briefly explain how this
education will help you strengthen the skills you do well and improve the skills
with which you struggle. (3 points)

I will need to pursue a masters degree in psychology and attend

graduate school. Pursuing this education will allow me to put my
compassion and passions towards mental health to a greater cause.
This will also link me with professionals in the field who can give me
advice on how to prevent my empathy from getting in the way of
doing my job.
