Five bio-diversity were Write your own thoughts /ideas/suggestions on every bio-
mentioned in the video “ biodiversity that you enumerated and how it can be protected to
Our Planet”. prevent destruction.

1. Dolphins  Dolphins are a critically important keystone species, meaning

that a healthy population of river dolphins indicates a healthy
and functioning river ecosystem at large. As predators,
dolphins help maintain fish populations in the river.
 Reducing pollution from both land-based and marine sources
is vital to protect dolphins. Governments, industries, and
individuals can take steps to reduce the use of harmful
chemicals, implement recycling programs, and reduce plastic
waste to prevent pollution in dolphin habitats.

2. Wildebeest  Through grazing, wildebeest reduce the amount of vegetation

that can act as fuel in a wildfire and make it possible for new,
diverse plants to grow. This improves habitat quality for other
species, including birds and butterflies, making wildebeest a
keystone species.
 To protect themselves, a group of wildebeest will come
together and begin stomping the ground. They also let out loud
calls to make sure the herd knows they are in danger.
Something else that threatens wildebeest is the fragmentation
of their habitat.
3. Orchid bees  They are easily distinguished from other bees by their
extremely long thin tongues, which can equal twice the length
of the body, and their shiny metallic coloration. They also have
fewer hairs than most other bees. Orchid bees are living
jewels.
 The orchid bee is an essential pollinator in tropical rainforests,
but it does not work for free. Male Eulaema meriana come to
collect nectar, as well as the spicy perfumes of the flowers.
Each male needs to make his own personal cologne to attract
a female and complete his life-cycle.
4. Caribou  Caribou are an important resource for indigenous peoples, a
prey species for carnivores and omnivores, such as bears and
wolves, and a critical source of nutrients for the soil in areas
where they forage in large numbers.
 To protect the caribou, we must restore its habitat and to keep
it out of reach of all industrial activities over a sufficiently large
area.
5. Polar bear  Polar bears have relatively high genetic diversity within the
species and can disperse over very long distances, suggesting
that they may have some capacity to adapt to the ongoing
changes in the Arctic.
 We can all contribute to reducing climate change, and
therefore help polar bears and other endangered species. A
significant cause of climate change is the emission of polluting
gases from burning fossil fuels, such as coal and oil. Fossil
fuels are burned when we use electricity or drive our cars,
among other things.
