Lesson 2: The Past Tense of the Verb ”to have”
Type of lesson: transmission lesson / assimilation of new content
Time: 50 minutes
Purpose: The purpose of the lesson is to practice the past form of the verb “to have”.

Specific competences:
1.2. Identifying the general significance of current oral messages, clear and rarely

2.4. Manifestation of interest in verbal exchange

Cognitive Objectives:
a) To revise the main structures learnt so far;
b) To revise the present form of the verb “to have”;
c) To express opinions;
d) To ask and answer past questions;

Affective objectives:
a) To create a warm atmosphere for learning;
b) To appreciate their work and efforts;
c) To make students enjoy using the English language;
d) To feel more positive when expressing their ideas in English.
Operational objectives: By the end of the lesson the pupils will be able:

O1 – to use past tense simple of the verb ”to have” in order to express past events;
The aim is considered achieved if each child uses the verb at least in five sentences.
O2 – to identify past tense simple of the verb ”to have” in different contexts;
The aim is considered achieved if each child identifies at least three verbs.
O3 - to ask and answer questions;
The aim is considered achieved if each child asks and answers at least one question.
O4 – to describe images using the present and the past tenses of the verb “to have”;
The aim is considered achieved if each child describes at least one image.

Teaching strategies

The class is divided into pairs. The teacher gives each Written

In five minutes each pair solves the task and then one
member from each pair reads the correct answers. If
they have any difficulty they ask the teacher’s help.

pairs receive a worksheet on which there is a table with
three columns. The teacher explains them that they

have to count the verbs and say how many forms of
affirmative there are in the text, how many of negative
and how many of interrogative. The teacher asks
different pairs to indicate the correct answers.

Children take notes about their homework. The teacher
gives them a worksheet which contains two exercises.
In one exercise they have to circle the affirmative form
of the verb to have, to underline the negative forms and

Have and had

Mary has apples, she has bananas, she has pears, she has grapes, she also has
tomatoes and she has cucumbers, too. But Today Mary is at the greengrocer’s. She want
to have many others fruit and vegetables. She asks the seller:
- Do you have red peppers?
- Yes, I do.
- Do you have green peppers?
- Yes, I do.
- Do you have salad?
- Yes, I do.
- Do you have pineapples?
- No, I don’t.
And she buys one kilo from all of them. Now she has red and green peppers and
salad, too.
Last week Mary didn’t have apples, she didn’t have pear, she didn’t have grapes,
she didn’t have tomatoes. She had strawberries, she had bananas, she had cucumbers, she
had sweets.

English texts

1. Do you remember? What did Vivian have on her desk? She had some books and
some pencils. She didn’t have pens and notebooks. Near her desk she had a guitar,
a ball. She didn’t have a violin and a motorcycle helmet. She didn’t have a TV in
her room, instead she had a laptop. She also had a radio. It was from her great-
grandmother. Did she have recordings for that radio?

2. My family had a farm in the south of England. I didn’t have a pet like a snake or a
lizard but we had lots of animals. What animals did we have on our farm? We had
cows and sheep and we also had many birds like ducks, chickens, geese, turkeys.
We had two very important animals on our farm. They were our sheepdogs. They
were very intelligent. At that moment, one lamb was my pet because she didn’t
have a mom!

 Count the affirmative, negative, interrogative forms of the verb “to have”, write the
number of the verbs and also the verbs into the correct columns.

I lived in London. It is the capital city of England. We had a flat in the city center. It was
nice but it wasn’t a place for a pet like a dog or a car. I didn’t have a pet for a long time. I
had dogs, cats, rabbits at the countryside, at my grandparent’s house but I didn’t have in
my own flat. Something changed!! Did I have any pets in my flat? Did I have a lizard?
Did I have snake? Did I have fish? Yes, I did. I had many fish. I had many Goldfish,
Guppy, Neon tetra, Green swordtail. I was so happy!
