a Letter to E, from A
Dear E,
You deserve a love letter that gets published
in paper, a letter that speaks of you in a way
that when people read it, they want you as a
friend. A letter that makes the reader feel a
portion of the love I feel for you.
Many times I think, in the context of our
friendship, about the word “deserve”. I think I
“don’t deserve” you and I think “you deserve
better”.  But I don’t want to make a mess of this
letter, so maybe I focus on the good things.
For example.
The other day I told someone, ‘You know that
E and I had a thing in 2015’, and I thought of
what that thing had left me with: the intense
desire of kissing you more, the intense desire
of knowing you better, the intense desire of
sharing beers with you like we did that night in
Corona (RIP), but this time without an empty
conversation, without me not knowing how
to not be awkward and instead with us both
being a little bit older. Age doesn’t matter but I
wouldn’t say no to that exact same night years
later, so we’re not only older but wiser, and
make jokes, and talk about intelligent things.
But maybe there’s time for it precisely now, in
other bars. I have so many things to ask you,
I have so many things I’d love to know about
you. I have endless curiosity for you.
Again, I don’t want to make a mess of this
letter, so I’ll focus on the friendship that you
give me, the friendship that I always dreamed
with: you are so honest, and so full of complex
feelings, and so raw. And you’re so funny. You
make the best jokes, I’ve laughed alone so
much when listening to you, or reading you.
You are so witty. You are sensitive. I love so
much when you tell me about something I say
that upsets you. I love you so much in those
moments. I love you for being straightforward,
and courageous. I learn. I also learn to be
loved despite making mistakes. You show me
such thing is possible. You give me chances.
You are generous, and for that I admire you.
You’re wise beyond control, you’re sometimes
too wise. I don’t act like this maybe?, but I feel
it very much: I like everything you are.
I like how you write, how you love your family,
the words you dedicate mostly to them. I want
to encourage you to write a book. I think people
would flip, that’s what your writing makes: it
flips my heart when I read your stories. You
have something inside you, a certain sadness,
that comes up in those words. It’s so raw it
makes me want to hug you, or rather sit next
to you, and touch your arm, and tell you, “Tell
me more”. You are a magnet to me, and your

I love how you feel about others. But that’s
for another letter: it makes me ache in a good
way, it makes me see you under a light that
intimidated me and inspires me: how someone
can be so caring towards others, how someone
can be so giving, so touching. You are that. I
want to be like you.
I can’t believe you are my friend. This is a
very messy letter, and I feel as if I’m scattered,
but better this mess than no mess at all: I feel
so lucky, so immensely lucky by the fact we
reunited and ended up being friends. I think
that sums it up: I am lucky because you’re
increíble, and you happen to love me. I very
often wonder: do you feel as loved as you
deserve, have I said it enough? I hope so.
The last messy bit.
It is a very sunny day, light showers all. We sit
in the sand, it’s really bright indeed. When we
say goodbye, standing at a traffic light, you hug
me and kiss me on the cheek and for a very
brief couple of seconds I think: is she going to
kiss me in the middle of the city? Has the world
gone crazy?
I’m happy, I’m lucky, and I’m yours, or: I hope
we’re friends indeed forever, until we’re very

Rarely do I engage in eye contact with somebody. But in this event, our eyes melted into each other, and we dove together into the realm
of infinite possibilities. We are ruled by contingency: every possible situation will eventually occur in one of the infinite possible worlds. The
colourful cups already had their stock replenished in the world to come.
The realm of possibility is warm. The creatures looking for a coffee cup felt their touching hands comfortably warm, like a cuddle under a soft
blanket.
There are no more colourful cups, but a cup is to come.

The garden in August

I run down the stairs through warm air and
rays of sun, green grass under my bare feet
and under the sweet smell of rose bushes I
run with small feet of a child in summer, fast
and flying steps. Mother’s attention points
the other way. She faces the flowers. As she
hears me coming she turns around a sneaky
look in her eyes: she is watering plants, then
watering me, watering the paper in my hands,
my drawing for her. Heavy and blind I run
away through sharp roses in sharp sunshine.
I still remember the feels of my mother
leaving behind the flowers only to face
my discomfort. She really wasn’t one for
apologies or treating tears with compassion.
But that day in the garden she did, over a wet
picture.
Years later I walk down the same stairs. I
see the trees and grass and leaves all deep
in greens -and the roses!- the roses seem to
start glowing soon after sundown. The garden
rests awake the way one rests awake after
spending the day in sunshine or with a loved
one.
Mother is soft and relaxed. We are drinking
wine. She has her eyes and ears and mind
