} /i/ or /iy/ : High front unrounded (tense) vowel as in beat
- 모든 모음가운데서 가장 높은 모음이며 긴장모음이다.
(/uw/도 고모음으로 간주되나 혀의 실제 높이는 훨씬 낮음)
- 입은 거의 닫힌 상태에서 입의 좌우편 가를 뒤로 젖힐 정도의 평순음
- 미국에서는 /i/가 이중모음화되어 /iy/로 발음되는 경향이 있다.

} /i(y)/ -/I/구별하기
- /i(y)/발음이 나는 spelling은 거의 모든 경우에 –ea, -ee-이며,
예외로 machine, police 정도가 있다.

} /ey/: Mid front unrounded (tense) vowel as in bait
- In comparison to /iy/, the jaw and tongue are somewhat lower and the
lips are not spread – at least at the beginning.
- /ey/ ends with a definite upward and forward movement of the tongue
toward the /y/ glide position.
- great, steak, break, late, make, eight, day, may, ray, made,
} /ɛ/: Mid front unrounded (lax) vowel as in bet
- To form it, the jaw is once more lowered just a little.
- The tongue exerts no pressure at all.
- edge, end, set, bed, went, red, dead, head, breast, bury, many
} /æ/와 /ɛ/구별하기
- /æ/는 거의 모든 경우 –a-의 철자일 때 나는 소리이다.
(예외적으로 many는 철자 –a-를 지니고 있음에도 /ɛ/로 소리 나므로 주의!)
- /ɛ/는 대부분 –ea-나 -e-의 철자인 경우 나는 소리이다.
(예외적으로 bury(–u-)나 said(-ai-)는 철자가 달라도 /ɛ/로 소리 나므로 주의!)
* vary는 /æ/나 /ɛ/ 으로 둘 다 발음 가능

- 역시 이중모음화 하는 경향
- 영국영어에서는 거의 대부분의 경우에, 미국영어에서는 강세를 받거나 어
말에 올 때 이중모음화
- obedience, November, coat, most, oak, boat, soap, both, choke
- so, old, cold, roll, blow, know, show, though, toe, zone, tone
} /Ɔ/ : as in bought
- 미국영어에서는 저모음, 영국영어에서는 중모음
- tense와 lax의 중간
- saw, lawn, law, yawn, dawn, all, chalk, salt, tall, hall, fall
} /ow/- /Ɔ/: cold-called, sew- saw, low- law, note- naught, toll- tall

- 영어에 있어서의 모음의 길이나 자음의 길이는 변별적이 아니다.
It’s hot. [hat] [ha’t] [ha:t] → No meaning difference

→ 뒤에 무성자음이 오면 성대의 진동이 멈춰야 하므로 자연히 모음이
짧아진다.
