location and excellent trout fishing, the Smith River is
one of Montana’s most sought-after outdoor recreation
experiences. Permits are required to float the 59-mile
section of river between Camp Baker and Eden Bridge
and are issued each year through a lottery. Parties of
up to 15 people can float with one permit. A person
applying for a Smith River permit must be a minimum
of 12 years of age at the time they submit their permit
application.
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks staff will remove
pit toilets at the float-in campsites along the Smith River
during the spring of 2024. All float parties, private and
commercial, will be required to pack out their human
waste from the Smith River corridor. This requirement
is similar to many other river systems in the West. The
rules implementing this pack-out system were passed
by the Montana Parks Board in late 2023.
Floaters will need to pack portable toilet systems.
To see a list of FWP-approved, portable, hard-sided
toilets that will be allowed, click here. Alternative waste
disposal systems, including bag systems, such as Clean
Waste and RESTOP2, will not be allowed.
Floaters can clean and sanitize their portable
toilet system with a SCAT (Sanitizing Containers with
Alternative Technology) machine, which has been
installed at the Eden Bridge take-out.
“Removal of the pit toilets will not only help reduce
impacts to natural and cultural resources, but also allow
more time for the river rangers to focus on other duties,
such as public safety and recreation ecology projects
like noxious weed control and stabilizing erosion at
boat camp landings,” said Colin Maas, FWP Recreation
Manager for the Smith River.
2024 is the first year applicants can buy a bonus
point for the Smith River Permit. A bonus point is
essentially an extra chance you can purchase for the
permit drawing. These points accumulate year after
year if you are unsuccessful in the drawing. Residents
can purchase a bonus point for $5; nonresidents can
purchase a bonus point for $50. The bonus point is
applied to your application the year it is purchased. You
can apply for a permit through FWP’s online licensing
system. For more information on bonus points, click

Finally, starting in 2024, the number of permits
available for nonresidents may not exceed 10 percent of
the available permits. This new law was passed as part of
House Bill 846 in the 2023 Legislative Session.

second frame. But the Wolves started to come alive when
Ameliya Doney and Keeley Blount-Henderson buried
back-to-back three-pointers, The Wolves climbed back
to with 30-22 when Azalei Ackerman drained a three.
Yoakam drilled a bomb at the buzzer to give Glasgow a
33-22 lead at the break. Yoakam nailed four 3-pointers
in the half.
The Scotties maintained a 13 point lead in the third
until Chappell drained a three for a 42-26 lead at the
3:08 mark. The Scotties took a 45-34 lead into the fourth
quarter.
Wolf Point managed to cut the deficit to nine in
the fourth. But Kyndal Schraner and Paityn Britzman
scored for a 54-41 lead at the 1:38 mark. Tanae Baker
put the finishing touch on the score with a bucket for
the win.
Yoakam scored a game-high 20 points, including
four treys and 4 of 7 free throws. Chappell followed with
13 points, Britzman had seven, Green six, Baker five,
Schraner four, and Page two.
Ackerman had nine points for the Wolves, Bauer
eight, Blount-Henderson anc Sierra Hamilton six each,
Kashlyn Speak Thunder and Jeri Lynn Black Eagle five
each, and Doney three.
Glasgow utilized its pressure defense and halfcourt
trap in the second half to break open a close contest
with Rocky Boy.
The Scotties trailed 19-18 at the half, but started
pulling away in the third. Glasgow took a 25-19 lead on
Green’s bucket at the 5:02 mark. Chappell scored twice
late in the third for a 39-24 advantage.
The Morning Stars were able to cut the deficit to
14 in the fourth but the Scotties wouldn’t break as they
finished the game on a 20-3 run.
Chappell had a game-high 19 points, including 4 of
8 free throws and 11 rebounds to lead the Scotties. The
sophomore scored 10 points in the middle two quarters.
Green scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half.
Yoakam chipped in seven points, Schraner six, Page,
Riley Evenson-Glasoe, and Britzman two apiece, and
Macy Martin one. The Scotties were 13 for 25 at the line.
Jayci Demontiney led the Stars with 14 points, Amiya
Four Souls had eight, Josie Mitchell six, Kalelee
Henderson three, and Tahanna Demontiney two.
With the long Christmas break Coach Cami Graham
had plenty to work on. One thing was getting her
Scotties healthy as they went into their last two games
of the 2023 season with a few sick players.
The other thing Graham wanted to work on was
the defense.
“We’ve been working a lot on trapping and
position defense to focus on our press,” she said. “At the
post we’ve been working on squaring up on the basket
and being really strong at posting up because that is
going to be our biggest strength. A lot of teams we play
won’t have as big of a post.”
Graham wants her guards to be strong at trapping.
But she is just trying to get playing minutes for most
of her varsity players. Chappell, Baker, Green, and
Yoakam had some minutes last year.
Glasgow is back in action Friday night when
Glendive pays a visit. Saturday night the Scotties are in
Malta to play the always-tough M-ettes.
Malta wrapped up its 2023 schedule with a 62-
37 win over Fairview while Scobey-Opheim whipped
Wolf Point 52-28.

“Montana’s Best
Bar and Grill”
I received a letter last week
from an anonymous source calling
themselves “The guys and gals at Montana’s Best Bar
and Grill.”
There ain’t no such place and if there ain’t no such
place then there ain’t no guys and gals from that place
which ain’t a place. If you are confused with that then
you can imagine how confusicated I became as I read
their letter.
First off they accused me of “sitting at his computer
all day writing about people he has never met or signs
his monthly check.” (I don’t get paid). Well, folks, I can’t
meet the people I write about because like this group,
no one is brave enough to sign their real names to the
wonderful cards and letters I get. As for the computer
thing....I maybe “sit at my computer” an hour a day, if
that. I get my news from TV, mainly Newsmax, Fox
and if I want a real good laugh I’ll tune into MSNBC
or CNN. One CNN talking head called all these illegal
aliens “Undocumented Americans”. Hand me the barf
bag!
The letter accused me of ‘grouping all Mexicans as

free loaders.’ Never have I written that. I have mentioned
the FACT that ALL who enter this country illegally are
criminals guilty, at least, of criminal trespass.
They asked if I sent back the covid checks. Yes I
sent back the first $600 to the White House. The $1400
I kept because Biden promised $2,000 saying the
$600 discrepancy was the $600 that Trump sent the
previous year. I have sent a bill monthly to Biden at
1600 Pennsylvania Ave for the $600 for a year with no
response.
Next, you try to decipher what this is asking. The
letter reads “do you have a legal part that you want
people to mention in an editorial? Maybe you did or
you didn’t just as all immigrants or politicians. Actually
anyone. We need to see the good in everyone...even
you.” Whaaat?
Can anyone listening to this tell me if that statement
is a criticism, a question, an observation or a praise?
Now to my almost favorite part of the letter. The
non-existent guys and gals at Montanas’ non-existent
Best Bar and Grill grill ask why I’m so tough on Tester. I
have always praised him for what he’s done to make our
military veterans more comfortable and are getting the
care they need. Good job Jon.
But then I ask myself, self, is the good he has done
for the Vets and the American Indians in Montana over-
shadowed by the damage he has done to the United States
in general by voting with the Biden administration 95%
of the time? His TV ads claim he recently “discovered
that China is buying land in the US.” He actually
“discovered”that fact back in 2010 at Bucks 5 T, Big Sky
when I told him they were. And then again in a letter to
him in 2013 when I told him again. That was the year
that the WH Group, a cabal of Chinese investors bought
Smithfield Farms in Smithfield, Virginia. The largest
pork producer in the US. While the investors insist they
are not part of the CCP I would question that. Anyway,
Tester knew 14 years ago and is just now saying “Not
On My Watch.”
Oh and BTW, the Senator has a brother who is a
veteran....my friend Chris wishes Tester had a brother
in the oil and gas business. Nuff Said?
Then the letter says that “ No Native Americans
get monthly checks from the government”. “They get
money from oil and gas reserves” (the letter doesn’t
mention that money comes in from land leases and
hydroelectric power as well, but who knew) to which
I would agree and I have written that in several of my
columns. As for monthly check....Native Americans as
well as White Americans, Black Americans, Hispanic
Americans, Japanese Americans and etc, a certain % of
the US population are on welfare (and I refuse to soften
“welfare” with the woke word “entitlements”). They all
draw checks from the government.
I’ve looked through my archives and have
found another mistake by the non-existent writers
of the “letter”. They write that I have said that the
information I pass on to my readers is 100% true and
factual. I have NEVER made such a stupid comment.
What with all the fake news, photo shop, instagram,
Artificial Insemination.... oops scratch that..... Artificial
Intelligence there is absolutely NO way to ferret out the
real news from the fake news. Simply use a tad bit of
common sense.
The letter asks “if I called Trump a Chump would
you take offense.” Hell no I wouldn’t. As most of my
readers know I have called him worse than that. But in
my opinion he’s still the only choice to save America as
we knew it before the Woke-Jokes and Green Weenies
started taking over.
I would say, in closing that if the drinks at the non-
existent MBBAG, served by the non-existent guys and
gals of same are as weak as their criticisms they won’t be
in business much longer.
Next time, man-up and sign your real name.
Oh and I would be more than happy to debate you....
publicly.....any time any place. I have tossed out this
invitation for many years, getting no reactions from the
liberals.

Another thing about Melford
In case you missed Wednesday’s Buzz, there was a
wonderful tribute to Melford Arrotta (February 18, 1926
- December 28, 2023), written by Paul Scott. Melford had
taken Paul, at age the age of 15, under his wing.
It was Joe Etchart that gifted us this article. He was
in this morning and thanked us for running it. Our
pleasure!
And then Joe told us another little story. About ten
years or so ago, Melford and Paul were out hunting, and
Paul asked Melford, out of all the technology he had
seen in his lifetime — men landing on the moon, cell
phones, etc., what do you think has been the greatest
invention?
Without missing a beat, Melford replied, “Insulated
overalls.”
Wow, wouldn’t it have been great to get to know
Melford.... thanks for sharing, Mr. Etchart.
What Are The Pictures?
A young lad was visiting a church for the first time,
checking all the announcements and posters along the
walls.
When he came to a group of pictures of men in
uniform, he asked a nearby usher, “Who are all those
men in the pictures?”
The usher replied, “Why, those are our boys who
died in the service”.
Dumbfounded, the youngster asked, “Was that the
morning service or the evening service?”
2023 reflection of weather
The National Weather Service office in Glasgow has
released its climatological report for 2023. Records date back
to 1893.
The hottest temperature recorded in Glasgow is 113,
set back on July 31, 1900. Last year’s highest temp was 107
degrees.
The coldest temperature recorded in Glasgow is -59,
recorded on February 15, 1936. The coldest this past year was
-18 degrees.
We received 11.90 inches of moisture in 2023, 1.54
inches below the average. The record is 22.96 inches from
2011.
Glasgow has 83.4 inches of snow in calendar year 2011;
this year, we received 46.5 inches, about 6 inches above
normal.
January and February were near-normal months,
though January was drier than normal. March 2023 finished
with 18.3 inches of snow, the third snowiest March on record.
It was 14.8 degrees colder than normal, and was even colder
than February!
April had large temperature swings, and May was warm
and wet, with 3.89 inches of precipitation. It was the 14th
wettest May on record.
The next 4 months were warmer and drier than normal,
allowing some drought impacts to return.
October was cooler and snowier than normal. The
storm system that brought 14 inches of snow from October
24-26 set a record for the greatest 3-day snowfall total in
October, passing the 2008 record of 13.6 inches. It was the
snowiest October on record.
With the global El Niño climate pattern in place,
November and December were warmer and drier than
normal; December was the warmest on record.
There were 17 daily temperature records broken in 2023;
15 were warm ones and 2 were cold temperature records.

100 just thirteen days shy
of his 101st birthday!
Leo, a WWII vetran,
former Griz football
player, farmer, husband,
father, grandfather,
brother, and Christian
were some of the hats he wore.
He was easily recognized around town by his
trademark tan shirt and trousers and enjoyed making
the morning coffee rounds with his fellow farmers. He
could always be counted on having chocolate hidden in
his vehicle, a can of wheat and Bible in his front seat,
and rocks he picked from a field on his floorboards.
He was a man of Faith and loved to talk about the
Lord. He was an example to everyone he met about how
to serve Jesus!
He enjoyed spending time with family and friends
and a good story telling session always made his day.
Leo is survived by his wife, Verna, sons: Jeff (Dawn),
Steve (Vonnie), Kyle, Scott (Jennifer) Pattison, eleven
grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren, sisters, Dora
Radakovich and Patsy Shepard as well as numerous
nieces and nephews. FRIDAY
