COMMON FUNGAL DISEASES IN SOME COMMODITIES

Fungi constitute the largest number of plant pathogens and are responsible for a range
of serious plant diseases. Most vegetable diseases are caused by fungi. They damage plants
by killing cells and/or causing plant stress. Sources of fungal infections are infected seed, soil,
crop debris, nearby crops and weeds. Fungi are spread by wind and water splash, and through
the movement of contaminated soil, animals, workers, machinery, tools, seedlings and other
plant material. They enter plants through natural openings such as stomata and through
wounds caused by pruning, harvesting, hail, insects, other diseases, and mechanical damage.

Sclerotinia Rot
Mosaic Virus

4. APPLICATION

Case Study Analysis

Students will work individually or in small groups to analyze and discuss case studies of fungal
diseases in commodities. They will identify the specific disease, its impact on the commodity, and
propose treatment and prevention strategies.
Rubric:
- Identification of fungal disease and commodity: 10 pts
- Description of the impact on the commodity: 10 pts
- Proposal of treatment and prevention strategies: 10 pts

IV. EVALUATION
1. How can the knowledge and understanding of fungal diseases be applied to solve real-life
problems?
2. What are the potential challenges in implementing the proposed solutions?

V. ASSIGNMENT /PERFORMANCE

treatment methods for fungal diseases. They will act out scenarios and discuss the effectiveness of
each method.
