Matter can change from one state to another without a

change in chemical composition. This physical change is
called Phase Change.
Melting happens when a solid turns
into liquid. When a solid is heated, it
absorbs energy enough to overcome the
force that holds the particles together.
The attraction between particles becomes
less allowing them to move freely. When
this happens, the melting point of the
solid is reached, and the solid melts. The
melting point is t he temperature at
which a solid turns into a liquid.
If more heat is added, liquid particles
move rapidly and farther apart. At this
point, the boiling point is reached. The
boiling point is the temperature at
E. Elaborate which vapor pressure becomes high
causing bubbles to form inside the body
of the liquid and evaporation happens.
Evaporation is the change from liquid to gas. As liquid
absorbs energy when heated, the closer particles of liquid
become separated. There will be less attraction between
particles which allows them to move freely.
The reverse process can also happen. Gas
can be cooled to become liquid. This
process is called condensation.
Condensation happens when a gas turns
into a liquid. When a gas
loses heat, the particles
become closer and roll
over as it turns into liquid.
Further cooling of the liquid causes
freezing or solidification. This process
allows the particles to get closer and have a

Melting is the change of matter from a solid state to a liquid

state. When a liquid state changes back to a solid state, this
phase change is called freezing/solidification. Evaporation is
changing matter from a liquid state to a gas state, while
condensation is the change from a gaseous state to a liquid

passing the liquid state, it is called sublimation. In addition,
deposition is the change from a gaseous state directly to a
solid state.
Increasing the temperature will increase the kinetic energy

arrangement of the particles in solid, liquid and gas. As the
temperature and the kinetic energy are both increase, the tiny

particles.
Decreasing the temperature will result in the decrease of
kinetic energy (motion) of particles, leading to a closer
distance between the particles. The lower the temperature
and the kinetic energy, the closer the particles are together.

E. Elaborate Physical change is a change in the form of a substance but
does not change it to another substance. It is a change in the
appearance of matter without changing its structure.
 The ripped paper and crumpled paper have all
undergone physical change because even if there is a
change in their appearance, the arrangement of their
particles is still the same. The paper is still a paper (a
solid) after being ripped or crumpled.
Phase change is a physical process in which a substance
goes from one phase to another.
 Moreover, for the lighted candle, cold water, and
alcohol there has been a change in their phase.
Phase Change under Physical Change
The students will be given situations:
1. There are 2 containers filled with water: a. one with a cover
and b. one without a cover. Both were left from 9 a.m. on a
hot day until the next 24 hours. It was noticed that the water
in both containers decreased, but container B had less water
than container A.

 Questions:

___________________________________________________________________________________________________
R epublic of the P hilippines
D epartment of Education
REGION IV-A
CITY SCHOOLS DIVISION OF BACOOR
CITY OF BACOOR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SPRINGVILLE
1. What do you think are the changes that took
place when the water is left in an open
container? In a closed container?
2. What is the particle used in the situation given?
 Water is the most abundant substance we can see on
our daily life basis. It is everywhere, may it be in the
sea, ocean, and other bodies of water. We use it as well
to hydrate our body and survive.
 In the particle nature of matter, it is said that the
particles are always in motion. Water molecules have
kinetic energy that differ from one another. Some
particles are higher, and some are lower which means
some move faster than others.

 The particles of a liquid attract each other, but since

the molecules of water differ in kinetic energy, some
break away from this attraction and escape from the
space of the liquid. The molecules that escape are the
ones with higher kinetic energy.
 The molecules that escape from the liquid and go into
the gaseous phase are called vapor and, in this case,
water vapor. The process by which the molecules on
the surface of a liquid break away and change into gas
is called evaporation.
 The process where gas changes into liquid is called
condensation. It is the reverse of evaporation. This
activity is shown in container A wherein the water
vapor did not escape because the container was closed.
The molecules of the water vapor collide with the cover
and accumulate forming droplets.
2. Put water in an ice cube tray and leave in the freezer
overnight. Upon checking in the morning, you noticed that
the water had become solid ice.
 When you put liquid water inside a freezer, the cooling
system of the refrigerator removes heat energy from the
water molecules. As a result, they lose and have less
kinetic energy and move slowly. Thus, the liquid
becomes solid. This process is called freezing.
 Similarly, the ice that melts is still water and the

D epartment of Education
REGION IV-A
CITY SCHOOLS DIVISION OF BACOOR
CITY OF BACOOR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SPRINGVILLE
process of converting solid into liquid is called melting.
3. Put a mothball in your drawer or closet and it will
disappear in time.
 This happens because it absorbs heat energy which
speeds up the molecules and lets them move further.
The solid then directly becomes gas, this process is
called sublimation.
 The snow does not occur in our country because we
live in a tropical region and the weather is hot. But in
some countries, snow is formed. The process involved
in the formation of snow is deposition. This process
converts vapor (gas) into ice crystals (solid). This
happens when the molecules of vapor in the air slow
down and move closer together, releasing energy.
Individual Activity
Name the phases of matter change in the diagram below.
