Where represents the structural forces obtained by the design and is the ultimate structural
resistance of the element.
Ultimate Limit States are related with safety of either persons or the structure itself. Forces are obtained
by increasing characteristic values of loads by means of partial safety coefficients. Resistance of
elements is evaluated through their geometrical characteristics and material properties reduced by
material partial safety factors.
During some stages of the design, computer programs such as Scia Engineer will be used. The results
from the structural models will be justified by presenting graphics and/or tables with the most significant
values. Additionally, in some cases, hand calculations can be used to verify the structural designs.
Refer to “Station Buildings Design Manual” Report No: AKH-YMI-DD-GL00X-D-CE-REP-0001 for further
information.
This report contains the structural calculations for the design of members and connections in passway
structure located in various stations of Awash - Kombolcha - Hara Gebaya Railway Project.
The passway structure is a steel structure consisting of 2 stairs and a passage platform. The structure
crosses a 2-lane railway, spanning approximately 20 meters along the passage platform between
access stairs.
The 4 meter wide passway rests at +7.76m on 3 column pairs. The middle part of the platform that lies
above the railway lanes is bound by high security hand rails of approximately 1,8 meters height.
Stairs at both ends of the passway provide access to station platforms. Stairs are composed of 3 shop-
welded assemblies that are to be fixed at site by bolted connections.
Lateral forces on the structure in the X-direction, perpendicular to passway, are mainly resisted by the
braces between column pairs supporting the passway platform. In the Y-direction, parallel to the
passway axis, lateral loads are transferred to the foundations by the frame action of columns. Each
column rests on a separate single footing at -1.30 level.

Passway:
Qk: 10 kN
Stairs:
Qk: 4,5 kN
Where;
Qk is the concentrated characteristic load. This load is not combined with other variable actions.
Section 5.4 of EC-1-2 require that horizontal forces acting along the bridge deck due to pedestrian traffic
need to be taken into account for footbridges. 10% of the uniformly distributed load is taken as horizontal
force, as per code specification. Passage platform and ramps are loaded with horizontal loads, as shown
in the below figure.
Stairs
Wind forces acting on decks, perpendicular to deck axis are calculated as follows, as per 8.3.2:
Passway deck:
b: 4 m
dTOT: 0,8 m Force per meter along deck's edge:
b/dTOT: 5,0 Fw/L= 0,84 kN/m
C: 3,6
Stair deck:
b: 2 m
dTOT: 0,6 m Force per meter along deck's edge:
b/dTOT: 3,3 Fw/L= 0,73 kN/m
C: 4,19
Wind load factor, C values are calculated according to recommendations in Table 8.2. The per length
forces are apllied to deck beams with 0,8 and 0,5 factors at the windward and leeward sides,
respectively.
Wind forces acting on decks, parallel to deck axis are calculated as per 8.3.4. 25% of the
perpendicular loads is taken into account, as recommended in 8.3.4.
Wind forces in the vertical direction are calculated as per 8.3.3. Force coefficient is taken as ±0,9 as
recommended in 8.3.3. Pressure and uplift wind pressures were calculated as:
3
ρ, density: 1,2 kg/m
vb, Basic Wind Speed: 22 m/s
cf,z: 0,9
2
fw: 0,26 kN/m
High security walls above railway lanes were assumed to be solid walls all along their heights and
were loaded accordingly. Stairs and ramps were additionally loaded with lateral wind pressure at their
projected area along inclined spans.
Following figures show wind loads assigned to frame members and load panels.
In the absence of detailed geotechnical reports related to each site, a ground type assumption is made
to be used in the calculations and the worst of all seismicity parameters foreseen along the alignment is
taken as the basis of ground acceleration. A more detailed explanation can be found in “Basic Design
Report No: AWR-YM-X-BTR-GNRL-001-00, Section 3.6 Seismicity, pages 12-14”.
The following Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) values are considered along the project:
PGA : 0,20g in the vicinity of Kare-Kore (up to 25km north and down to 25km south),
PGA : 0,16g at the other places.
Peak ground acceleration value 0,20g is taken for calculations of the structural members.
Ground type C is selected for calculations (EB1998-1, Table 3.1 :Deep deposits of dense or medium-
dense sand, gravel or stiff clay with thickness from several tens to many hundreds of metres,
Vs,30(m/s)=180-360) and with a conservative approach. Type I elastic response spectra is sellected
according to EN1998-1 Table 3.2 (MS>5,5).
Structure behaviour factors for X and Y directions are determined as per EC 1998-2:2005, Table 4.1.
On the X direction, column pairs are braced with normal bracing. On the Y direction, piers are in bending.
Considering Limited Ductile Seismic Behaviour, q factor value 1.5 is selected for both directions.
Linear dynamic analysis has been carried out for the application of seismic loads. Specifications of
section 4.2 of EC 1998-2:2005 has been followed. Response spectrum with following parameters is
introduced into the design software and seismic loads are applied by modal superposition, considering
dead and superimposed dead loads on the structure. Eurocode provisions do not specify the inclusion
of pedestrian traffic load in the seismic load conditions and contributing mass.
