Jason Sterling ("Sterling"), date of birth (DOB) XX/XX/1988, a Police


Officer employed by the [Washington D.C.] Metropolitan Police Department
( "MPD"), was interviewed at the FBI' s Washington Field Office, 4th St. NW.,
Washington, D.C. After being advised of the identity of the interviewing
Agents, FBI SA Bryon J. Speakes (CV) and FBI SA Joshua Stenzel (NF), and the
nature of the interview, Sterling provided the following information:

By way of background, on January 6, 2021 Sterling was assigned to conduct


crowd control activities in the region of the Upper West Terrace at the
United States Capitol. While located in that region Sterling was exposed to
fire extinguisher retardant on at least three occasions.

Sterling identified the three times he was exposed to fire


extinguisher retardant, which is visualized below with the following

attached snippet below obtained from social media images of AFO #255:

[Agent's Notes: At this time Sterling was shown an approximately 30 second


video clip derived from his body warn camera ("BWC"), which depicted the
same event as presented within snippet #3 above. Also at this time Sterling
was also shown seven printed images of AFO #255.]

Sterling stated that he was located in the region of the Lower West
Terrace as depicted in the events presented in snippet #1 above. When
exposed to the fire extinguisher retardant Sterling, and other law
enforcement officers, had to displace from their positions as the retardant
has the effect of obscuring their view. Sterling believed that this
obfuscation caused, collectively, law enforcement to be exposed on their
"left flank."

Sterling stated on January 6, 2021, while conducting crowd control at


another incident located within the "tunnels" located near the Lower West
Terrace his helmet and gas mask was removed by rioters. Sterling while in
the tunnels was exposed to an explosive pyrotechnic device, which at the

date of the interview still suffers from hearing loss. Sterling was unaware
of what happened after loosing his helmet, only that it was recovered and
returned by another MPD officer on January 6, 2021.

Sterling when shown the seven printed images of AFO #255 stated that he
did not recognized the male presented in the images.

At this time Sterling was furnished with the undersigned business card
and the interview was terminated.
