DIRECT AND REPORTED SPEECH

Background Information for Learners

Direct Speech is saying exactly what someone has said (sometimes called
quoted speech). Here, what a person says appears within quotation marks
("...") and should be word for word.
For example: She said, "Today's weather is not good."
……..or "Today's weather is not good," she said.
Reported Speech / Indirect Speech, we do not use the exact words of the
speaker. Instead we report what was said. We sometimes need to change
pronouns and verb tenses. We don’t use speech marks/quotation marks.
For example:
Reported Speech:
“I am going  Helen said she was going home. OR
home.”  She said she was going home.
