- Câu điều kiện (Conditional sentences) là loại câu dùng để diễn tả giả thiết, nói về một sự việc chỉ có thể xảy ra khi điều kiện
được nói đến xảy ra. Nó tương tự như cấu trúc “Nếu… thì…” trong tiếng Việt. (nguyên nhân-kết quả).
- Cấu trúc If được hình thành từ 2 mệnh đề:
• Mệnh đề nêu điều kiện (If clause): mệnh đề này thường bắt đầu bằng “If” (nếu)
• Mệnh đề nêu kết quả (Main clause): đây là mệnh đề chính trong câu, nhằm diễn tả kết quả kéo theo.
- Câu điều kiện gồm 2 loại: Câu điều kiện có thật và câu điều kiện không có thật
Note: Thông thường, mệnh đề If đứng đầu câu. Lúc này, giữa hai mệnh đề cần phải có dấu phẩy ở giữa để ngăn cách.
Nếu mệnh đề If đứng sau thì không cần dấu phẩy.
e.g. If it rains, we will stay indoors. (Nếu trời mưa, chúng tôi sẽ ở trong nhà.)
We will stay indoors if it rains. (Chúng tôi sẽ ở trong nhà nếu trời mưa.)
a) Câu điều kiện loại 0
Câu điều kiện loại 0 dùng diễn tả các sự việc luôn đúng (sự thật hiển nhiên hoặc chân lý).
If + S + V/ Vs/es, S + V/ Vs/es
e.g. If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils. (Nếu bạn đun nước đến 100 độ C, nó sẽ sôi.)
If it rains, the ground gets wet. (Nếu trời mưa, mặt đất sẽ ướt.)
If you don’t eat for a long time, you get hungry. (Nếu không ăn trong thời gian dài, bạn sẽ đói.)
b) Câu điều kiện loại I
Câu điều kiện loại I dùng diễn tả những sự việc có khả năng xảy ra trong tương lai.
If + S + V/ Vs/es, S + will + V
e.g. If it rains tomorrow, I will stay at home. (Nếu trời mưa vào ngày mai, tôi sẽ ở nhà.)
If you study hard, you will pass the exam. (Nếu bạn học chăm chỉ, bạn sẽ đậu kỳ thi.)
