here is group 2, and on that side is
group 3. Please move, quietly!

This activity is called CONNECT Yes, ma’am.

ME. I have here 6 pictures, but I will
give you 2 pictures in each group.
All you need to do is, you are going
to match the following pictures
according to their similarities. There
are 2 categories; in group A are the
Pictures that use texts that need to be
read from beginning to end, while
group B pictures that do not need to
be read from beginning to end. Put
and connect the picture to its
appropriate category. Is that clear?

So, choose 1 representative in each

group, and put whether the pictures
is in category A or B.

(The teacher distributes the pictures)

Let’s start! Are you ready? In Yes, ma’am.

our topic for today?
I think it’s about text and graphs,
Yes Fe? ma’am?

Yes, it could be. Another? Ma’am?

Yes? I think that it needs to be read from

beginning to end, and the other one
is, it doesn’t need to be read from
beginning to an end.

Yes, absolutely! So, what is it It is called, linear and non-linear

called? text, ma’am.

Yes! Very good, Alyssa. So based

from our activity, the category A is
linear text and the category B is non-
linear text.
d. Abstraction We will learn more about linear and OBJECTIVES

of transcoding linear to non-

c. Transcode linear texts to
non-linear texts and vice

So class, do you have any idea on
It refers to anything that can be read
what is the meaning of text? which is used to send or convey a
particular meaning, ma’am.

Yes, very good! So, texts are

categorized as either linear or non-
linear text. Let us start first with the
linear text. Linear text refers to
traditional texts which are those
texts that uses words in order to
form sentences and paragraphs, This
type of text needs to be read from
the beginning up to the end to get
and understand the message of the
writer.

So give me some examples of Linear (Dandy raises his hand)

hand.

Yes, what else? Essays, ma’am.

Yes, very good! Those are some

examples of linear text, and there are
also stories, poems, essays, letters,
and etc.

Do you have any questions on linear None, ma’am.

texts?

Now, let’s go to Non-linear text.

Non-linear text is the opposite of
linear text. As its name suggests, this
type of text uses words combined
with symbols and graphs to convey
and give information. In this type of
text, the reader that does not have to
go through the text sequentially in
order to make sense of the text. The
reader decides where to start reading
or which parts to read.

So, what are some examples of non- Graphs, ma’am.

linear text?

Yes, what else? Table, and charts, ma’am.

Okay, very good!

So, some examples of non-linear Yes, ma’am.

texts are; graphs, timelines,
organizational charts, tables,
flowcharts, diagram, and venn
diagram. Am I clear?

Aside from reading these types of

text, sometimes you will also be
asked to transcode the information
from one form to another. When you
transcode, you convert a linear text
to its non-linear text representation,
for example a paragraph to a pie
chart, or vice versa, non-linear text
to linear text example a table into a
paragraph. Take note that when it is
done, the original message of the
text is not changed or revised, only
the structure and format.

In transcoding, you should extract Step 1: Read and understand the

information from a linear text to source text to get it main or central
non-linear text. idea.
Here are some steps for you to Step 2: Extract important details to
follow, please read! be included in the visual
presentation.
Step 3: To be organized, classify
information into categories
Let us look at the example:

So, what have you observed in this?

I think that it is about the process of

is in paragraph converted to a non-

and a marker. In this activity, you’re
going to transcode or convert linear
text to non-linear text So, each
group will be given a picture of
linear text and what you’re going to
do is to transcode it to non linear
text. And, choose a representative
and present your outputs in front,
okay class? So you will just be given
5 minutes to transcode the pictures
to its form.

Do you understand? Yes, ma’am.

Are you ready? Yes, ma’am.
