MC02: Counselling process

Assessment 1: REPORT 20%

Students are required to write a report that demonstrates knowledge of the three core
conditions to a working relationship: empathetic understanding, congruence/genuineness,
and unconditional positive regard through an interaction in the real world. Specifically, you
are required to:
Before writing it up:
1. Have a clear understanding of what these core conditions of a working relationship
entail. Do allocated weekly activities & readings on the Moodle site. Do further
research.
2. Have an interaction with another person (only 1 other person in each
interaction) who either does or doesn’t demonstrate one of the core conditions to
a working relationship. The interaction must be recent and not from the past.
More recent interactions allow for better reflection.
3. Reflect on this interaction immediately to help support your report write up.
Note: how you felt, what you were thinking, how you responded (verbally and
non-verbally). What aspects of their non-verbal and verbal behaviour indicated
to you the presence or absence of the core condition. Write as much down as
possible as this will support the write up of your report. Go back to your
research to ensure you are accurate with your identification of the core
condition in this interaction.
4. Repeat this for each core condition. You must have a separate interaction for
each core condition. You cannot use the same interaction for each core
condition.
When it comes to writing it up:
5. Clearly define the condition in your own words (no quotes) drawing on
relevant and appropriate literature.
6. Provide a summary of the interaction to allow the reader to understand the
context of the interaction (keep this brief). Clearly identify the presence or absence
of one of these core conditions to a working relationship by identifying and
analysing the non-verbal and verbal behaviours of the other person and how this
links to your understanding of the core condition under analysis. Again, draw on
relevant and appropriate literature to support your analysis here.
7. Reflect upon and describe the impacts on the relationship at the time. Again,
drawing on relevant and appropriate literature to support your analysis on how
the presence or absence of this core condition can impact a working
relationship.
8. Reflect upon and describe the impacts this had on you (how you felt, what you
thought, how you reacted verbally and non-verbally to the person in that
interaction where there was a presence or absence of the core condition under
analysis).
9. Repeat steps 5-8 for each of the core conditions to a working
relationship (i.e., therapeutic alliance).
