2. PURPOSE

2.1 The Purpose of this document is to explain how the measurement of the Pin Thread Diameter is
performed by using one of the thread diameter measuring options listed below for TenarisHydril
Wedge threads, although the inspection method selected shall be used for the complete order.

3. PERSONS AFFECTED

3.1 This document is applicable to all:

3.1.1 All Tenaris Premium Connections Manufacturing Services Personnel.
3.1.2 Facilities licensed to thread TenarisHydril connections.

4. REFERENCES

4.1 Not Applicable.

5. DEFINITIONS AND ABBREVIATIONS

5.1 Definitions and Abbreviations are defined in the most current revision of TenarisHydril document
TSH-GP-00.0001.

6. RESPONSIBILITIES

6.1 Responsibilities are defined in the most current revision of TenarisHydril document
TSH-GP-00.0002.

7. PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION

7.1 Personnel qualification is defined in the most current revision of TenarisHydril document
TSH-GP-00.0003.

8. PROCEDURES

Primary thread diameter, the diameter in the plane of the basic wedge lead offset corresponding to the
load flank midpoint is specified on the licensee product drawing.

This diameter shall be referred to as follows:

Primary Thread Diameter –Pin Connectors Datum –B--

8.1 Inspection:

8.1.1 Locate Actual Thread Diameter by Blade Micrometer

A Blade Micrometer with a non-rotating spindle, the anvil and spindle having a blade end
for measuring is used to perform this measurement.

8.1.1.1 Measurement by Blade micrometer is used to check the pin thread diameter,
datum -B- pin connection, by taking a root to crest diameter measurement. The
diameter is checked by placing one of the blade anvils into the root of the thread at
the gage pin lockup location. The other blade anvil is placed on the opposite
thread crest 180 degrees around the pin connection.

When full form threads are not available due to black crested threads, measure the
thread diameter forward from the gage pin lock up towards the end of pin one or
more thread pitch(s) and subtract the taper inches on diameter per pitch for the
number of pitch(s) advanced, from the blade micrometer root to crest thread
diameter identified on the licensee product drawing.

8.1.2 Locate Actual Thread Diameter by Single MRP Gage

A MRP diameter gage is used to establish the thread diameter, datum –B– pin connection.

8.1.2.1 Place the stationary contact of the MRP gage on the thread crest in line with the
standard line on the pin OD established by the end of the part gaging method.
Sweep the indicator side of the MRP gage across the thread crest 180 degrees
around the connection. The indicator reading will be an actual representation of
the thread diameter.

8.1.2.2 Drawing example: Thread Diameter inspection by Single MRP gage

8.1.3 Measure and Record the Actual AVERAGE Thread Diameter

The above two gaging methods has established the actual thread diameter location and it’s
options to measure, although the actual average measured thread diameter shall be
recorded. To established this measurment an MRP set up for ovality is required see TSH-
IP-53.0055. Using the MRP established for measuring thread ovality, place the stationary
contact of the MRP gage on the thread crest at the point were the actual thread crest
diameter has been measured ( Gage Pin Lock up ). Sweep the indicator side of the MRP
gage across the thread crest 180 degrees around the connection. The MRP indicatior
reading shall be set to the actual measured thread diameter.
Example: If the box thread diameter measures +0.004”, set the indicator to read +0.004”.
Take measurements 360 degrees around the connection. Record the highest and the
lowest reading. The difference between the highest and lowest reading is the actual
Ovality. The average of the highest and lowest reading is the actual average thread
diameter.

8.1.4 Measurement by Ring gage

8.1.4.1 A thread diameter ring gage is used to established the thread diameter, datum-B-
pin connection. Screw the ring gage onto the pin connection until it makes up
securely with the thread crests. The standard line ( the standard line is marked
from the End of Part/Thread Flank Length gaging step) on the pin OD should fall
within the standard and tolerance lines etched on the OD of the diameter ring
gage. There is a gross error check to prevent the gage from being a full revolution
out of tolerance. Gross error standoff requirements are etched on the OD of he
gage.

8.1.4.2 Drawing example: Thread Diameter inspection by ring gage

Note: In some cases the gaging method on the Inspection Report contains no numerical data for
a specified method. For these cases the associated gaging method may be available for use,
however, formal written authorization shall be sent to TenarisHydril for approval.

8.2 Acceptance / Rejection criteria

Thread Diameter Inspection is acceptable if the measured values are within the limits prescribed
on the IR.
