A Lesson Plan in Mathematics IV Using Explicit Teaching Or Direct Instruction

Objective : 1.Divide fraction by a whole number.

2. Visualize division of fraction
Subject Matter: Dividing simple fraction by a whole number
I .Introduction :
A. Motivation:
B. Presentation
Let us read first the story problem ;.

Ana has 1/3 of pizza and she want to share it to her friend Sisa.
What part of the whole pizza will each of the two of them
receive?

To answer the problem let us consider the following questions:

A. What is asked? What part of the whole Pizza will each of the two friend receive?
B. What are the given facts? 1/3 pizza – two friend
C. What operation to be used? Division
II. Teaching/Modeling
You need to pay attention, as I teach you how to divide a fraction by a whole number.
Before we divide a fraction into a whole number, let us answer first on given question above, before I
present to you the steps and procedures to how to solve the problem.

To answer the problem above, let us consider the following diagram.

If we split the third into two equal parts, each part is 1/6 of a Pizza

Here are the steps on how to solve the problem:

STEPS 1/3 ÷ 2 3½÷3

A. Changed the mixed 3 ½ = 6/2 + ½ =7/2
number into an improper Not applicable
fraction
B. Find the reciprocal of the 2/1x1/2=1 3/1x1/3=1
whole number divisor 1/3 is the (reciprocal)
1/2 is the (reciprocal) multiplicative inverse of 3/1
multiplicative inverse of 2/1
C. Multiply the dividend by 1/3 x 1/2= 1/6 7/2 x1/3 =7/6
the reciprocal of the
divisor. Reduce into lowest 1/6 cann0t be reduce to lowest 1 1/6
term if possible term

Teacher: Directly states the generalization :

We can divide a fraction by a whole number, if we changed a mixed number into improper fraction,
finding out the reciprocal of the whole number divisor and Multiply the dividend by the reciprocal of the
divisor.

III. Guided Practice

Teacher prepares two set of activities,
Teacher says : All you have to do is to answer correctly on the given activities.

A. Read and Analyze the problem :

In Maligaya Elementary School, there are 335 boys and 43 are

girls. How many students are enrolled in this school?

To find the sum, lets add the given number

335

+43
Teacher reminds the given numbers, before getting the sum of it, on the first activity; on the second activity,
pupils will directly answer on it without identifying the place value of a given numbers.

B. Find the sum

1. What is the sum of 432 and 27? 4. 546 added to 43?
432 546
+27 +24
2. 546 add to 23, what is the answer? 5. If we add 236 and 23,what is the sum?
546 536
+23 +43
3. 452 is added to 24 the sum is?

452

+23

Teacher gives immediate feedback as needed, and review on the pupils’ output.

IV. Independent Practice :

A. Add the following numbers, and Encircle the correct answer.

1. 123 a. 175 b. 162 c. 165

+ 42___

2. 434 a. 458 b. 448 c. 438

+ 14___

3. 644 a. 686 b. 677 c. 679

+ 33___

4. 742 a. 756 b. 755 c. 765

+ 14__

5. 656 a. 669 b. 679 c. 697

+ 23___

B. Add the following numbers correctly without regrouping

6. 532 9. 463
+ 46 + 34

7. 345 10. 624

+ 34 + 53

8. 432
+ 34__

V. Application :
Arrange the given number and add the following without regrouping.

335 + 13 =

A. 953 + 42
C. 322 + 24=

E. 423 + 75=
F. 714 + 32= A Lesson Plan Prepared By :
