UNITS OF MEASUREMENT

 We got some practice last class with traditional units of

measurements.
 We know a single unit can have many values
 Ex: 1 inch = 0.0833ft = 2.54 cm = 0.0254 m = etc.
 The unit that is often used in chemistry – the MOLE
(abbreviated as mol), and it also has many values!

2
MOLAR MASS
 The weight or mass of one mol of whatever
compound/molecule/atom/etc. in question
 Ex: The molar mass of pennies is the weight of 6.02 x 1023
pennies
 Ex: The molar mass of NaCl is the weight of 6.02 x 1023
molecules of NaCl

3
MOLAR MASS CALCULATIONS
 How to get calculate Molar Mass
 Step 1: Count your atoms!
 Step 2: Write out the atomic weights/masses of each element
 Step 3: Multiply the weight by the number of that element
present
 Step 4: Add up the products from each element
 Step 5: Add unit (g/mol)! NO NAKED NUMBERS

4
EXAMPLE 1:

 Find the molar mass of Cl2

5
EXAMPLE 2:

 Find the molar mass of Al(NO3)3

6
THE MOLE MAP
(KEY WORDS): You can
replace “particles” with
molecules, atoms,
compounds, or formula units

Key words: mass Key words: volume

and/or grams (g) and/or Liters (L)

7
EXAMPLE 1:
 How many particles of H2O are present in 5.6 moles of H2O?

8
EXAMPLE 2:
 How many moles of oxygen gas is present in 23.4 grams oxygen gas?

9
EXAMPLE 3:
 What volume would 1.78 mols of O2 occupy?

10
EXAMPLE 4:
 How many particles are present in 56.27 grams of Cu(OH)2?

11
EXAMPLE 5:
 What is the volume of 23.4 grams oxygen gas?
