C Reading
Exercise 1. Read the following passage and circle the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to
each of the questions.
These days, if you want to travel from New York to Beijing, the flight takes about 16 hours. You also
have to wait at the airport, and sometimes you have to transfer onto a different airplane. If you add all of
that extra time, the trip takes at least 20 hours. But in the future, the trip from New York to Beijing might
only take two hours.
Right now, a private company is developing something called ET3. ET3 stands for “evacuated tube
transport technology”. The capsules use electricity instead of gasoline. For international travel, the capsules
can travel at about 6,500 kilometers per hour. That is much faster than airplane - most modern airplanes
usually only fly at about 800 kilometers per hour.
There are other advantages to ET3. Because it uses electricity, it is quite clean. In addition, it is much
quieter than airplanes and cars. Finally, ET3 tubes and capsules don’t require very much building material.
.
1. How long might it take from New York to Beijing in the future?
A. 16 hours B. 20 hours C. 2 hours D. 22 hours
2. Is a private company developing something called ET3?

Exercise 3. Read the text and decide if the following statements are True or False or Not Given
according to the text
Travelling in the future
Transport today is mostly powered by fossil fuel. The reason for this is the ease of use and the existence
of mature technologies harnessing this fuel source. The drawbacks are that they are heavily polluting and
rely on limited natural resources. There are many proposals to harness renewable forms of energy, to use
fossil fuel more efficiently, or to use human power, or some hybrid of these, to move people and things.
The list below contains some forms of transport not in general use, but considered as possibilities in the
future.
A hyper loop is a proposed mode of passenger and/or freight transportation. A hyper loop is a sealed
tube or system of tubes through which a pod may travel free of air resistance or friction conveying people
or objects at high speed while being very efficient.
A dual-mode vehicle is a vehicle that can run on conventional road surfaces or a dedicated track
known as a guide way. Dual-mode vehicles are commonly electrically powered and run in dual-mode for
power too, using batteries for short distance and low speeds, and track-fed power for longer distances and
higher speeds.
A jet pack, rocket belt or rocket pack is a device, usually worn on the back, which uses jets of gas (or in
some cases liquid) to propel the wearer through the air.
1. A hyper loop can convey people or object at high speed.
A. True B. False C. Not given
2. A hyper loop can run on rails.
A. True B. False C. Not given
3. A dual-mode vehicle can run only on conventional road surface.
A. True B. False C. Not given
4. Dual-mode vehicles can run on batteries for short distance and low speeds.
A. True B. False C. Not given
5. A jet pack works like a helicopter.
Exercise 4. Read the text and decide whether the sentences are true (T) or false (F).
What means of transport will look like in 2050? The new types of transport will require new and better
sources of energy as well as physical and technological structure. Advanced technology and electric
equipment will form the future of transportation.
1. Autonomous Helicopter
Autonomous aircraft is the future of mass transportation. Flying taxis are definitely a dream of everyone if
they work in big cities and want to avoid traffic jams.
2. Drone Bus
While flying taxis and autonomous helicopters can transport only a few people, a flying bus can commute
a group of forty. Moreover, it takes only an hour to travel on a drone bus from Los Angeles to San
Francisco or from London to Paris. Unlike an aeroplane, the drone bus will be able to land and take off
closer to city centres.
3. Electric Scooter
Electric scooters will become very popular as a quick and economical way of transport to reach
destinations. Many companies are thinking about improving this transportation mode. For example, it will
use artificial intelligence to get people to their favourite destinations. It will connect to smartphones via an
app and allows riders to ask and receive voice commands about location or how much battery is left.
Statements True False
1. The means of transportation will have better features and technology in
the future
2. One problem of using flying taxis is having traffic jams.
3. Passengers using drone buses can get on and get off near the city centres.
4. A drone bus can carry fewer passengers than flying taxis.
5. You will use mobile apps or your voice to operate the future electric scooter.
Which new inventions will we use in the future? Which ones won’t we use? It’s hard to know!
Statements True False
1. Among the three vehicles, Magnetic Levitation Train is the fastest one.
2. Among the three vehicles, SkyTrain is the lowest one.
3. Magnetic Levitation Train can hold more passengers than the others
4. Ryno Micro- Cycle can travel at a very fast speed.
5. Ryno Micro- Cycle is navigated via a smartphone app.
6. SkyTrain is driverless vehicle.
7. Ryno Micro- Cycle weighs more than 160 lbs
Exercise 6. Read the following passage, and then tick the correct answers: true (T), or false (F).
Thinking about how we will be travelling in 10 or 20 years is very interesting. Will we still be using planes
or will we be flying our cars from Paris to London? Here are some suggestions.
SkyTran
Currently being developed at NASA, SkyTran looks like the monorail at Disney World. Moving at
240km/h and using small amount of energy, it could be the future of city transportation. SkyTran has the
passenger capacity of a 6-lane highway.
Flying cars
Zhu Wenxi and Lai Zexin, Chinese students, have designed a solar-powered flying car that doesn't
need a runway to take off. If you have about 2 hundred thousand dollars, you will own this vehicle soon.
An electric minibus
The minibus Cameo, designed by Martin Pes, can carry 32 passengers but it is small enough to get its
way out of a traffic jam. Its electric motor and low weight mean that it can be recharged in seconds while
stopping and it has zero emission.
An eco-taxi
Taxis are bad for the environment and traffic jams. We enter the eco-taxi, and individual taxis form a
train powered by solar panels.
1. SkyTran is fast but cannot be used as a means of transportation in the city. ________
2. Flying cars designed by two Chinese students run on solar energy. ________
3. Flying cars don't need a long runway to take off. ________
4. Because it is small, an electric minibus can avoid traffic jams. ________
5. Several eco-taxis can form a line moving together, using solar energy. ________
Exercise 7. Read the passage and write T (True) or F (False) next to the sentences.
The autonomous car
It is the most spectacular revolution. Tomorrow, cars will be able to do without their drivers. "This
development will be in stages: we start without feet and then do without hands and eventually without
eyes, “says Pascal Brier.
The first two stages have already been completed. Cruise control has existed for several years: drivers
can set a cruising speed and remove their feet from the pedals. And some cars now offer driver assistance
systems that make it possible to remove the hands from the wheel in specific situations such in traffic jams,
or when parking, etc.
The next step? 100% autonomy. Engineers are working to replace human eyes with a multitude of
cameras, sensors and lasers that will reproduce the environment in 3D and allow the vehicle to make
navigation decisions alone. Popularized by Google and its famous Google car, most manufacturers have
begun looking at autonomy and are currently in the phase of conducting major tests on the roads.
1. The autonomous cars will be able to do without their drivers. ________
2. The first two stages of the development are starting without feet and then do without eyes. ________
3. The drivers can set a cruising speed and remove their feet from the pedals. ________
4. Most cars now offer driver assistance systems. ________
5. Engineers are working to replace human hands with a multitude of cameras, sensors and lasers.
________
6. The autonomous cars can't make navigation decisions alone. ________
