2. Copies of the passage for each student
3. Highlighters or colored pencils
4. Graphic organizer (can be pre-made or drawn on the board)
5. Timer
6. Whiteboard and markers
7. Reading comprehension worksheets (optional)
Lesson Duration: 60 minutes
Procedure:
1. Introduction (10 minutes):
 Greet the students and briefly explain the purpose of the lesson: to improve reading comprehension
skills through close reading.
 Discuss with students the importance of understanding what they read and how it helps them in
academics and in life.
 Introduce the passage or excerpt you have chosen for the lesson.
2. Pre-Reading Activity (10 minutes):
 Engage students with a pre-reading activity to activate their prior knowledge related to the topic of the
passage. This could be a brainstorming session, a KWL chart (What I Know, What I Want to Know,
What I Learned), or a brief discussion.
 Set a purpose for reading by asking students to predict what they think the passage might be about based
on the title or any pictures or headings.
3. Close Reading (20 minutes):
 Instruct students to read the passage silently to themselves.
 Encourage them to underline or highlight important information, unfamiliar words, or anything they find
interesting.
 Set a timer for about 10-15 minutes, depending on the length and complexity of the passage.
 After the first reading, have students discuss what they noticed or found interesting. Address any
unfamiliar vocabulary or concepts.
4. Second Reading and Analysis (15 minutes):
 Have students read the passage again, this time more closely. Encourage them to pay attention to details,
make connections, and ask questions about what they are reading.
 Distribute a graphic organizer or draw one on the board to help students organize their thoughts. This
could be a Venn diagram, a T-chart, or a story map, depending on the content of the passage.
 As students read, ask them to fill in the graphic organizer with key information, main ideas, supporting
details, and any questions they have.
5. Discussion and Summary (5 minutes):
 Facilitate a class discussion about the passage, focusing on comprehension questions, main ideas, and
key details.
 Encourage students to share their thoughts, questions, and findings from the graphic organizer.
 Summarize the main points of the passage together as a class.
6. Extension Activity (optional):
 Depending on time and resources, you may choose to provide students with a related worksheet or
activity to reinforce their understanding of the passage. This could include comprehension questions,
vocabulary exercises, or a writing prompt.
7. Closure (5 minutes):
 Review the objectives of the lesson and ask students to reflect on what they have learned about reading
comprehension and close reading strategies.
 Assign any homework if necessary, such as finishing the graphic organizer or completing the extension
activity.
8. Assessment:
 Informally assess students' comprehension throughout the lesson through observation, participation in
discussions, and completion of the graphic organizer.
 Optionally, assign a formal assessment such as a comprehension quiz or written response to gauge
individual understanding.
