UNIT 9

Activity 1
Directions: Given two editorial cartoons, explain what makes them good or bad using the principles
of editorial cartooning.

ANSWER:

What makes the given editorial cartoon good is the elements that are effectively used,
particularly the labels, symbolisms, and the irony. The editorial cartoon comprehensively coneys the
message on the irony of how hatred and terrorism or negativity is given more attention, fame and
emphasis rather than the positive things such as love, hope, unity and peace, labeled and
symbolized in the editorial cartoon. On the other hand, what makes it a little bit off or bad is perhaps
the excessive use of characters or subjects which makes it appear a bit too crowded but
nonetheless, the editorial cartoon has strongly manifested the message it want to convey.
ANSWER:

What makes this editorial cartoon good is the clear drawing that it exude which helped a lot
in expressing a recognizable point-of-view from the cartoonist. The editorial cartoon used only two
subjects with one label each, an octopus labeled as “corruption” and a man labeled “Philippines”.
This strongly illustrates a single idea which is about the serious and horrible corruption in the
Philippines. Indeed, the use of some elements like symbolism and labeling are effectively utilized in
the editorial cartoon. More so, what makes it good is the humorous sense or satirical image that it
presents and so as the entertainment that is characterized in it.
