1. Introduction

This document consists of calculation for stability check for installation of solar panel on
BSR Shed of Berger Paints India Ltd located at Taloja MIDC, Navi Mumbai.
This document involves details of load calculation performed during stability check, load
combinations considered as per IS-456, and conclusion regarding its design.

2. Design Basis

Based on site visit conducted on 2-10-2023, Berger paints wants to install the solar
panels on the top of their existing steel shed. Accordingly, structure was inspected to see
feasibility option for installation of solar panels on roof of the BSE shed. A several
dimensions are taken on site which were practically feasible. Some of the portions of shed
are not accessible due to obstructions present on floor and high altitude of steel framing.
In such case appropriate dimensions taken based on the judgement. Mr Deepak informed
us that there is no data/ information/ drawings/ report of steel shed are available hence
certain appropriate assumptions are made to examine the structure. Some of the pictures
are taken on site those were attached in this report later.
The scope includes analysis of existing structural steel shed for the additional load of
solar panels which are going to mounted on top of roof.
Following are some important points, assumed/considered from design per the
information/input received -
1) All the profiles used for framing & dimensions of shed are based on the site
measurements.
2) Some of the additional miscellaneous items are hanged or attached to steel shed
due to past requirements. Consideration of such unknown misc. weights are not
considered for the analysis.
3) It is impossible to guess the connection details like weld size and weld type due to
absence of steel drawings, connections are not checked.

After analysis it found that some of the steel members are lacking in the strength for this
newly added solar panel loads. In such cases retrofitting is required. It can be done by
addition of members to existing one or partial demolition and replacing with the member
who is fulfilling this new demand. Here, an attempt is made to fulfil the purpose
considering the economic factors and feasibility of retrofitting work. In addition to IS-800 as
a design code, some other codes were used where extensive study are done on the
retrofitting area such as AISC Design Guide-15 and IBC & NBC.

3. Calculation of loads for BSR Shed-

A. Dead Load (DL) –

As per input received from Mr. Deepak, the design weight of solar panels is 25 kg/m2
considering all aspects. The same is considered for the design.
Hence, DL of Panels = 25 Kg/m2
= 0.25 Kn/M2 or Kpa.
An area load of 0.25 kn/m2 is applied to shed as show in below figure.

B. Live Load (LL) –

Per IS-875 part-2, the current roof is non accessible hence it is assumed that the roof is
designed earlier with 75 kg/m2 live load intensity. This magnitude of load covers the live
load at the time of installation of solar panels hance additional live load is not considered.

C. Wind Loads (WL) –

As roof is already designed for wind loads already hence no need to consider the wind
load on solar panels.

D. Earthquake Loads (EQ-X & EQ-Z) –

Seismic loads of solar panel can be calculated as below.
Design Horizontal Seismic Coefficient (Ah) can be given per clause 6.4.2 of IS 1893-2002.
𝑍 ⋅ 𝐼 ⋅ 𝑆𝑎
𝐴ℎ =
2⋅𝑅⋅𝑔
Where, -
Z – Zone Factor (For Mumbai – 0.16)
I – Importance Factor (for other buildings – 1)
R – Response reduction factor (Steel frame with braces – 5)
Sa/g – Average response acceleration coefficient
Fundamental time period - Ta = 0.085 * h0.75
= 0.085 * 80.75
= 0.4043 Sec
Considering medium stiff soil site conditions and referring to figure-2 of IS-1893,
Sa/g – 2.5
Hence,
0.16 ⋅ 1 ⋅ 2.5
𝐴ℎ =
2⋅5
𝐴ℎ = 0.04
Hence,
Design Seismic Base shear can be given as – VB = 𝐴ℎ ∗ 𝑊
Use multiplying factor as 0.04 in analysis software to get seismic weight of solar panel.
Such lateral seismic load is applied in X-Direction & Z-direction both.

5. ANALYSIS AND RESULT INTERPERTATION: -

After analysing the structure for strength and service load combinations below results
were found.

A) Check for Deflection -

After analysing the structure for service load combinations below results were found.
Following figure shows the max nodal displacement in decreasing order.

Actual Max Deflection considering all critical load combos = 0.833 mm

Which is very very less and hence okay from serviceability point of view.

B) Check for Member Utilization -

After analysing the structure for strength load combinations below results were found.
Below figure shows the utilization of members for envelope combinations including seismic
loads.

7. CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATION –

The BSR shed is analysed for additional loads due to solar panel and it is found that

some of the members are failing and hence requires retrofitting. Such failing members are

again designed for several retrofitting options to suit the requirements. The most optimum

retrofitting option from economic perspective is suggested here.

Following are some recommendations based on our expertise in retrofitting areas –

1) Recommend retrofitting of marked steel members by unloading any additionally applied

loads to regain its undeflected shape pretty much.

2) Recommend two coats of paint are recommended when painting bare such retrofitted

areas from durability perspective. The first coat acts as a primer, and the second coat is

the layer of paint. Paint should apply for every 3 years to prevent it from rusting.

3) A proper care should be taken during welding operation. STRICTLY AVOID EXCESSIVE

WELDING, as this will result in weakening of existing as well as new retrofitted material.

4) Eliminate foreign items which comes in the way of welding of retrofitting items.

5) Recommend keeping the frequency of inspection of shed by structural engineer after

retrofitting of shed, for every 3-years unless required otherwise to account with safety

and client’s requirement.

I Certify that, I have inspected the premises more specifically Steel Roof shed for the
purpose of installation of solar panel on its roof on date 2-10-2023. In this visit various
parts of steel shed including steel members, dimensions and other necessary informations
are observed and noted down for its further calculation purpose. The Structural steel shed
is modelled and analyzed in 3-D Finite Element Based software.

The critical and weak members of the steel shed are retrofitted so as to sustain additional
load caused by installation of solar panels. I am of the opinion that retrofitted structure is
structurally sound and its stability will not be endangered by its intended use as a factory.
