Main components
Brake system
SAHR brakes

• The SAHR (Spring applied, hydraulically

released) brake system. Springs apply the
brakes and hydraulic pressure releases them.

• Mounted inboard the wheel ends on both front

and rear drive axles.

Brake system
Function Applied

• When no hydraulic pressure is sent to the

brake piston, the springs inside the brake
housing are applying mechanical pressure to
the piston and forcing the disks together.
• This Mechanical force is what is preventing
the hub assembly from turning.

Brake system
Function released

• When hydraulic release pressure is sent to

the brake assembly, the piston is pushed
towards the springs and compresses them.
• This releases the mechanical force
preventing the disks from moving. The hub
assembly is then allowed to rotate.

Brake system
Brake pump

• Located on engine
• Fixed displacement gear pump
• Oil from the brake pump is directed
to the accumulator charge valve

Brake system
Brake accumulators

• In the brake system it is used as a storage device.

• When the brakes are applied oil is taken from the
accumulator to satisfy the system demands.
• The accumulator is then recharged by the brake
pump and the system pressure is maintained at the
set level
• The stored energy in the accumulator gives off the
release pressure very quickly; this gives the system
quick responsiveness.
• The accumulator is of the piston type and the pre-
charge pressure is 83±3.5 bar

Brake system
Accumulator charging valve

• Oil flow from the brake pump is directed to the accumulator

charging valve.
• Depending upon system load, direct most of the oil to either the
accumulators or the brake cooling and pilot circuit steering.
• When the accumulator pressure drops to 110 bar +/- .5, the
accumulator charging valve sends oil to the brake accumulator.
• Once 138 bar +/- .5 is reached, the acuumulator charging valve
shifts back to non-charging mode. The accumulators will now have
138 bar pressure stored for releasing the brakes.

Brake system
Park brake solenoid valves

• Two series-mounted brake valves

• Both valves must be energized to release the brake
• The current to both brake solenoid valves is disconnected
when the parking brake is applied.
• Both solenoids valves are energized when the parking brake is
activated, the stored oil pressure in the accumulator is directed
to the brake control valve.

Brake system
Door interlock conditions

• Park brake cannot be disabled when the door is open

• Park brake shall be engaged when door open
• Park brake must be circulated when door has been open
• Gear goes in neutral when door open
• Park brake will apply under 4km/h, however is speeds are
higher than this only a warning will be shown on the display.

Brake system
Brake release valve

• Located in the power frame outside the cab

• Directs pressurized oil in the accumulator to the wheel
ends and release the brakes.
• The actuation knob is in the cabin accessible to the
operator, situated at knee level. With the accumulator
hydraulic pressure charged, pushing in and holding the
manual release knob will direct the pressurized oil in
the accumulator to the wheel ends and release the
brakes.

Brake system
Hydraulic hand pump

• To release the brakes, use the hand pump until reaching

approximately 138 bar in the accumulator. The pump has
a built-in pressure control valve to prevent from over
pressurizing.
• Releasing the override control immediately vents system
pressure from the brake assemblies to the hydraulic tank
and reapplies the brakes.

Brake system
Brake pedal

• Located in the cab, the mechanical means for the operator

to control the hydaulic pressure within the brake system.
• The service brake valve will proportionately adjust the
pressure in the brake housing according to his demand.
• When the foot pedal is actuated, the flow of oil to the hubs
is gradually cut off and the oil at the hubs is allowed to
return to the hydraulic tank. The hub SAHR brakes then
apply.

Service and troubleshooting
Brake system
Bleeding the brakes
§ Any traces of air in the brake system will have a negative effect on the
performance of the system. The pumps must also be bled if any work was
conducted.
1. Park the truck on a level surface.
2. Block the wheels.
3. Place the articulation lock into the locked position.
4. Have a co-worker sit behind the wheel, engine running, with the parking
brake off and the foot brake not pressed.
5. Begin with the rear brakes. Position one end of the bleed hose in a bucket
containing hydraulic fluid.
6. Screw in the other end of the hose on the bleed valve.
7. Bleed the brakes until the system is free of air bubble.
8. Loosen and remove the bleed hose and continue to the next bleed valve.
9. After the rear brakes have been bled, move on to the front brakes.
10. After all four brakes have been bled, the machine can be returned to service. © 2018 by Epiroc. All rights reserved.

Brake testing procedures
§ Testing the park brake
Testing the park and service brake is always performed on a flat surface
- Start the machine
- Ensure no one is around the machine – carry out the normal safety procedures
- Keep the park brake switch pushed i, (i.e.) in the applied position
- Select forward or reverse gear, whichever is the safer option
- Select 2nd gear
- Activate park brake test button to position 1 to test the first solonoid. Then select position 2 to test the second
solonoid.
- Slowly increase the engine RPM to full throttle – the machine must not move. If it does, immediately stop the test
and report the defect to the maintenance department.
- Release the throttle pedal
- Select neutral

Brake system
Brake testing procedures
§ Testing the service brake
- Make sure the park brake is applied.
- Put the machine in 2nd gear forward or reverse
- Firmly press the service brake pedal and hold
- Release the park brake
- Slowly increase the engine rpm to maximum. The service brakes should prevent the machine from moving while at full rpm.
- Release the accelerator pedal.
- Select neutral and apply the park brake.
