CHARACTERISTIC TEST ON SINGLE PHASE TRANSFORMER

SAMPLE PROBLEMS

1. At no-load current of a transformer is 4A at 0.25 pf when supplied at 250V, 60hz.

Determine the :
• Core loss
• Resistance representing the core loss
• Magnetizing reactance
2. A short circuit test was performed upon a 10-kVA, 2300/230 volt transformer
with the following results: Esc = 137 volts; Psc = 192 W; Isc = 4.34 A. Calculate in
primary terms the reactance of the transformer.
3. A 2300/230 volt distribution transformer is tested for polarity in accordance with
the standard method, if 120 volts is impressed across the high voltage windings
determine the voltmeter reading if the transformer has
a. Additive polarity
b. Subtractive polarity
4. A single-phase transformer has a core loss of 70 watts at 45 Hz and measures 100
watts when the frequency is 60 Hz. At both conditions, the measured value of the
maximum flux density is the same. Determine the core loss at 50 Hz.
5. The no-load loss of a transformer is 100 watts at rated voltage and 30hz and 300
watts at 60hz. What is the hysteresis loss at 60hz and rated voltage?
6. Given that full load copper losses are exactly twice the iron losses in a 50kva
transformer, and the quarter load efficiency is 96.5%. calculate the full load
efficiency at unity power factor.
