Formative I - Unit 4

1a) The section where you can find non-metals is Section

C.

1b) Section A contains only Metals(Alkaline Metals).

2a) Image Below

2b) The unknown element that is explained is a metal. I
think this because the explanation of this element is
“sonorous, conducts electricity, and ductile(can be drawn
into wires)” and nonmetals are quite bad conductors of
electricity, are quite brittle which means that they can’t
be drawn into wires, and when you slightly hit non-metals
they don’t make a ringing or long lasting sound.

Task 2:
a) - The rows on the periodic table are called
groups/periods.
- The columns on the periodic table are called
groups/periods.

b)
Element Sodium Magnesium Aluminium Silicon

Melting point 98 649 660 1410

(°C)

The melting point from Sodium to Silicon is quite different, and this is
because of the difference in the amount of course but also the difference
that you see in how it starts with sodium at 98° and automatically goes
right up to 649°, then slowly goes to 660° and after that goes right up
again to 1410°. In this difference, you can see that the elements may have
similar chemical properties but the physical properties can sometimes be
really different.

c)
Element Lithium Beryllium Boron Carbon

Melting point 181 1287 2076 3527

(°C)
The main difference between these two graphs is obviously how the
numbers are different and how they are much higher but also they don’t
have the same pattern in how they are put together, first it is low and then
goes up, then it lowers again and then goes right up to 3527°. Meanwhile,
the other graph just continues to go up.

Task 3:
a)
Melting point (°C) Boiling point (°C) Reactivity with
water

181
lithium 1330 fizzes steadily

Fizzes, burns, and then

sodium 98 890 dissolves/explodes lightly.

756 fizzes and burns with a

potassium 64 lilac flame

rubidium 39 688 explodes with sparks

The pattern that I see with this graph is that the melting point becomes
higher from top to bottom and it is the same with the boiling point. Also,
in the Reactivity with water they all “fizz” and/or react in a similar way.
b) In the table.

Task 4:

a)
Physical Chemical

low melting points +

low boiling points +

colourless gas at room temperature +

good insulator of heat +

unreactive +

b) The differences between chemical and physical

properties are that chemical properties are things that
can be seen/noticed when an element goes through a
chemical change, meanwhile physical properties are
things that can be noticed when an element goes through
a physical change.

c) I don’t think it will react with nitrogen because noble

gases don’t really react with anything, except for maybe
some of them react with oxygen.
