CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

cigarette is well-known narrow that contains tobacco and other psychoactivesubstances and is very

addictive, poisonous and contains about 4000 different chemicals, many of which are carcinogenic,

as well as oxidants like oxygen free radicals, which arethought to be the primary causes of

molecular damage. (Atalla, 2015) Nature about smoking habits in academic performance cause

more than that 7million students have a low academic performance at 2017.20% of men aged 16

abovesmokes compared with 17% of women .In 2015 ,80% of youth ages 12-19 years weresuffering

exposure to second hand smoke. Finish statistical show that there are about 20%smokes daily and

55% had tried smoke. (Gifford, 2012)However, countries like Canada, Mexico, Belgium, Denmark,

Sweden, Thailand,Malaysia, India, Pakistan, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Greece, The

Netherlands,New Zealand, Norway, Hungary, The United Kingdom, France, Romania, Singapore,

Egypt,Jordan, Nepal and Turkey have both graphical and text based warning label for

cigarettes(Gilman, 2011) According to Karma (2020), white smoking rates vary by country,

approximately 20%of the Saudi population smokes. This is also true for teenagers. Tobacco use has

beenlinked to poor academic performance, including poor concentration and memory

function.Smoking, according to our hypothesis, may be a barrier to optimal learning. The

dentaltrainees in this study took part in the research. Participants had less education than

thosewith higher dental2

school levels. The study discovered that smoking had a negative effect on academicperformance,

which was especially strong for students who smoked cigarettes. The smokingrate in the population

was 64.36%. Smoking rates differ by gender, with men smoking morethan women. Female smokers

on other hand, are in the minority. According to Ullan (2019) it is recommended that the university

should take action tomake dormitories and common areas smoke free because the growing and

troublingprevalence of smoking among boarder students. For researchers and public

healthprofessionals working in the field of health promotion and education more

specifically, undergraduate students in a multicultural and multi-ethnic nation, this study is

highlysignificant. This would support the development of fresher, more potent strategies for

enhancing academic performance and quitting smoking. We the researcher will research the impact

of smoking in academic performance inGrade 12 students. Therefore, the aim of this study is to

identify the effect of cigarettesmoking on the academic performance among students.

CHAPTER IIREVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE This chapter presents the relevant

literature and studies that the researchersconsidered in strengthening the claim and importance of

the present study .This researchwas primarily focused on impact of smoking habits in academic

performanceSmoking has negative effects on a person health as well as their financial

security, personal life, and well-being of others around them .Almost all of the body organs

andcauses sickness and impairment at least 30 person suffer from a major smoking relatedillness

for every smokers who passes away. Smoking also raises the risk of developingcancer, heart disease,

strike king conditions diabetes (CDC 2014). The impact of smoking not only immediately affects a

young person’s health, buttheir future too young smokers are more likely to develop severe levels of

nicotine addictioncompared to adults, which leads to continued tobacco use as they grow older

nicotinenarrows blood vessels increases blood pressure and puts added strain on the heart

thismeans shortness of breath asthma and respiratory illnesses not to mention centre and other

chronic diseases .Aside from health effects, there are also many adverse social effects of smoking ,it

can make hair and clothes stink, stain teeth and cause bad breath ,and smokerstobacco can lead to

cracked lips, sores, and bleeding in the mouth. Tobacco (2022) Students who smoked tend tonged

lower average result compared to students whoare non-smoker students that proofs the association

between the habit of smoking and thestudents’ academic performance’s Atallah (2015)6

The relationship between cigarette smoking and academic performanceachievement was

investigated. It was found that non-smokers received the best grades. However, there isn’t much

evidence linking smoking to failing grades. Our findings imply thatlaw academic achievers may be
more susceptible to smoking, but that smoking is not mainfactor influencing academic success.

Since there are many other factors that influence therelationship between academic achievement

and smoking. It is not surprising that smokingbehaviour was a little less severe among students

with lower academic achievement. Therehas to be more research done to determine the exact

causes of a lower educational level.(Mohamed Yaser Kharma et.al. 2016)Conceptual

FrameworkFig 1: Conceptual Paradigm on the Impact of Smoking Habits in Academic

Performance of Grade 12 Students in Taft National High School Smoking is negatively associated

with academic performance while smoking hasconsistently stronger effect on academic

performance than cannabis. Students with poorer grades had greater tendency to smoking than

those who had good grades.7Smoking CigaretteAcademic Performance

CHAPTER IIIMETHODOLOGYThis chapter concentrate on the discussion of the research

method andprocedures adhered to by the researchers to answer systematically the specificproblem

posed for investigation. Specifically, the research design, respondents of the study, locale of the

study, sampling procedure, instrument of the study, datagathering procedure, data analysis and

ethical consideration were explained in thischapter.Research DesignThe quantitative research

design using descriptive-correlational will beutilized. A type of research design that aims to obtain

information to systematicallydescribe a phenomenon, situation or population. Voxo

(2021).Respondents of the StudyThe primary respondents of this research will be selected 150

grade 12students who are officially enrolled and currently studying at Taft National

HighSchool.Locale of the StudyThe researcher will conduct this study at Taft National High School

specificallythe Senior High School Department. The school is located at Barangay 5, Veteranos9

St. Taft, Eastern Samar, where the total enrolled student in grade 12 Humanities andSocial

Sciences are more than 200 students.Sampling ProcedureThe sampling technique that the

researcher used was purposive sampling. Apurposive sampling is a non-probability sampling

technique in which respondents areselected because they have characteristics that you need in your

sample. In thisstudy, selection of participants will be based on the characteristic of the

smokingability of student.Instrument of the StudyThe data will be collected using the self-made

questionnaire that will bedistributed to 150 students. The questionnaire is conducted using

statement of theproblem and observations of the researchers. The researchers made a

surveyquestionnaire to identify the Impact of smoking habits in academic performance inGrade 12

students at Taft National High School.Data Gathering Procedure At first, the researchers made a

survey questionnaire to identify the impact of smoking habits in academic performance of Grade 12

students in Taft National HighSchool.10
