It is time for a meeting of the Social Committee. We need to start planning the annual
year-end party. I would like all members of the committee to meet next Friday morning
from 9 to 11 in Conference Room A. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are
available to attend this meeting.
Thank you.

Hi George,
I got your message about the Social Committee meeting next Friday. I am sorry but I will
be unable to attend because I have a dentist appointment at that time. I would like to
suggest that you ask allthe committee members when they are free for a meeting and then
choose a new meeting time based on that information. Also, I think that Conference
Room B is a better place for a meeting because it is a larger and more comfortable room.
I am looking forward to working on the plans for the year-end party.

What are the advantages and disadvantages when schools require their students to
take physical fitness classes?
It is undeniable that physical education is a necessary subject. When designing a
curriculum, most schools do not overlook the importance of it. However, when studying
physical fitness classes is mandatory, this brings about both benefits and drawbacks.
Firstly, the overriding advantage of forcing students to learn physical education is to have
a balance between studying and relaxation. It would appear that students these days have
a stressful life as a penalty of much pressure from learning, tests, exams, and
assignments. It is argued that this outdoor activities-oriented subject is a useful way for
students to lower the level of stress during terms. Besides, physical education classes
help arouse excitement among students. After a tiring school due to theoretical lessons
on History, Literature, or Sociology, they could engage in outdoor activities like doing
exercise, playing sports, or going jogging. Thereby bringing students comfort to improve
their work-life balance.
Secondly, physical fitness lessons play an important role in encouraging
students’ physical and mental well-being. The more time students must spend on
studying, the fewer chances they might have to stay healthy. Supplementing the
curriculum with these classes helps students make use of their time at school to do the
workout. Besides, not only do schools play their part in educating students on knowledge,
but they also need to ensure student’s physical and mental development. As a result,
requiring students to attend physical education classes is beneficial to both of them.
However, there is an increasing concern among many people when it comes to this
obligation. First, when students partake in physical fitness classes, they may face a high
risk of being injured as a consequence of running, jumping together with plenty of other
activities. Second, not all schools have the appropriate facilities to organize such special
classes. The facilities that were of poor quality concerning gyms, exercise equipment, and
even professional trainers, are seen as one of the reasons leading to accidents, injuries for
students.
Finally, many students have difficulties in sparing enough time for studying physical
education and other subjects at the same time. The time they could spend on compulsory
subjects like Maths, Physics is limited, let alone take time to learn such a minor one.
In conclusion, it seems to me that asking students to study physical education classes
could produce both the pros and cons. (388 words)

Dear Mr. George,

I have received your e-mail about my decision to change banks. I would be happy to
explain this decision to you. I decided to use another bank because your bank doesn’t
have any branches close to my job. You might be able to get more customers if you
opened more branches in different neighborhoods. I also suggest that you place cash
machines in more locations around the city. If you make going to your bank more
convenient, I think your customers will be happier.

Shirley,
I am working on the annual budget report as you requested. You asked me to have it
finished by next Friday; however, it’s taking longer than I thought. Could I have one

Thank you.

Hi John,
I got your message about the budget report. I’m sorry, but I really need to have that report
finished by next Friday. If I asked two other people to help you, would you be able to
finish it by then? I need the report because we are going to discuss the budget at a

Modern technology has made it possible for many people to work at home most of
the time rather than going to an office every day. What are the advantages and
disadvantages of working at home? Support your answer with specific reasons and
examples.
Because of modern technology, many people do most of their work at home instead of at
an office. There are both advantages and disadvantages to this situation. Working at
home is very convenient for the employee. However, it makes supervision of work and
collaborating with co-workers more difficult.
The main advantage of working at home is convenience for the employee. A person who
works at home does not have to get up early to get dressed and ready for work. The
person doesn’t have to spend time traveling between home and the office. This means the
employee has more time to pay attention to home and family as well as having more
energy to devote to work.
On the other hand, there are several disadvantages for the employer. An important one is
supervision. It is much more difficult for a supervisor to manage the work of several
employees if each one is working in a different place. It is hard for the supervisor to
provide support and to make sure that each employee is actually working during work
hours.
It is also difficult for co-workers to collaborate on projects if each one is working at
home. When co-workers are working in different places, then formal meetings are
difficult to schedule and informal meetings become impossible. This can have a major
effect on the quality of the work. It also makes it difficult for the employer to form work
teams and organize projects.
There is a current trend toward working at home. These days, more and more people are
doing it. There are certainly advantages to following this trend, but there are also
disadvantages. Each employer has to take several things into consideration before
deciding if allowing employees to work at home is the best plan for the company.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is more important to work
at a job you enjoy than to make a lot of money. Support your answer with specific
reasons and examples.
Some people think that it is more important to work at a job you enjoy than to make a lot
of money. I have to say that I agree with this statement. If you work at a job you enjoy,
you will probably do your job better than if you work at a job only to earn money. You
will also feel happier. Money has its uses, but everyone knows that it doesn’t buy
happiness.
Most people do their work better when they have a job they enjoy. If they are interested
in their work, they are willing to put more effort into it. They will take the time to learn
more about their profession and improve their skills. They don’t mind spending extra
time on the job when that is required. Overall, they have a good attitude toward their job,
and that can improve the way they do it.
When people enjoy their jobs, they feel happier. They are happy to go to work. They are
also happy outside of work hours because they don’t feel the stresses of an unpleasant
job. Since most people spend a large percentage of their lives at their jobs, it is important
to have a job that brings happiness.
Earning a lot of money is a goal for many people, but money does not lead to a happy
life. If you focus on making money, you may miss the opportunity to bring other things
into your life, such as self- fulfillment, love and friendships, and just relaxing and
enjoying yourself. If, on the other hand, you focus your work on doing something you
enjoy, you will be happy whether or not you also earn a lot of money.
The best way to have a good life is to do work that you enjoy. That may or may not be
work that earns you a lot of money. It will, however, be something that makes your life
better.

Learning an additional language is a good way to improve your job prospects.
Employees usually ask themselves what should be done to develop their career. It is my
belief that knowing another language is among beneficial to one’s career path in
several aspects. In this essay I will explain its benefits in terms of getting a job, earning
promotion opportunities, and increase job security.
To begin with, language advantages give people greater access to job openings. One
reason is that there are more and more positions with bilingualism requirements. For
example, the hospitality industry or multinational firms usually require that employees be
fluent in at least on foreign language. Also, even bilingual skills are not a requirement,
they are still preferable. A candidate speaking an additional language therefore has higher
competitiveness over those who do not, which leads to a higher chance of being
shortlisted and chosen.
Additionally, bilingualism opens up opportunities for higher pay and promotions. Many
companies are willing to offer bilingual employees higher pay than monolinguals.
Regarding promotion prospects, I will take Kien, a friend of mine, as an example. He is
currently working in the marketing department of a German company which has several
German partners. Being the only one who can effectively communicate in German, Kien
has been able to bring in new important contracts. Shortly after joining the company, he
was promoted and received a substantial pay rise.
Lastly, foreign language skills contribute to raising an employee’s value, making him
indispensable to employers. According to researchers, bilingualism increases people’s
brain power and boost their creativity. As a result, workers fluent in another language
tend to have higher productivity. Their ability to think out of the box usually leads to
better problem-solving skills. Foreign language skills also prove that these employees
possess high learning capacity, which allows them to constantly improve their
professional expertise and other essential skills. Obviously with such qualifications are
much appreciated by employers which brings them greater job security.

In conclusion, being able to speak an additional language is a good step toward a better
job prospect.

Hello. I've been looking at the photo gallery of your online home buyer's ad.
Congratulations on trying to sell your home without a real estate agent. It is difficult (we
have done it twice) but is worth the effort if you find a reasonable buyer. My sister is
interested in buying a home in your region. Your home could be ideal if you are willing
to negotiate the price. Your asking price is about $10, 000 above her budget. She also
wants to live near an elementary school and a bus route. I'm not sure if your home is near
these amenities. Could you let me know about these details? Most importantly, are you
open to negotiation on the price? Please let me know when the house would be available
for viewing.

Thank you.
Sincerely,
Taryn Kent

Hi. Thank you for your message. We are excited about selling our home privately. Your
sister is welcome to call me at 222-444-4444 to schedule a time to see our home. We will
be showing it this weekend. We are willing to negotiate but will not be able to drop the
price too much. We have just spent $7000 on basement renovations.

There is an elementary school a few blocks from here. It has a very good reputation. The
local bus stop is about a five minute walk down the hill. I look forward to meeting your
sister. Thank you for reviewing the photos. We love this house and have lived here for
twenty years.

Warm regards,
James Canyon

Some companies block their employees from using social media networks and
websites such as Facebook. Do you think managers should trust employees to use
time wisely, or do you think it is smart of companies to block access to some sites?
Provide reasons and examples to support your opinion.

The average work day is seven to eight hours long. How much of this time is spent
working? People who work on computers have many distractions due to the Internet.
Some companies have been forced to restrict usage of certain sites, such as Facebook and
Twitter due to concerns about productivity. It is a wise decision to remove these Internet
temptations.

A boss is not a babysitter. Though some people only log onto Facebook or surf the
Internet on their own time, other people cannot resist temptation. Having rules about
Internet use is not enough. Some employees cannot stand to be stuck in their offices
without social interaction. If they need a short break, they should be encouraged to stand
up and stretch. Unlike chatting to friends on Facebook, this type of activity increases
productivity. By blocking certain social sites from a system, the boss need not waste time
monitoring those who cannot follow rules.

When time is wasted online it is the company that pays for the loss. Employees on salary
still get paid no matter how productive they are. Those who waste time may not get raises
or bonuses, but they still get a pay cheque. It is only the employer that loses out when
time is wasted online. Employers should not feel guilty about restricting Internet access.
If surfing the Internet and sending out Tweets is not part of one's job description, these
activities take away from true duties.

Some employees have lost their jobs because they wrote something online against their
own company. It is too easy to press send, post, or publish these days. Preventing
employees from using certain websites actually protects the employees as well.

There are many honest workers who can be trusted at work. They only check Facebook
or Twitter during their break time or lunch, and they don't post any information that could
damage the company's (or their own) reputation. Unfortunately, there are always a
handful of workers who cannot be trusted. By eliminating the temptation, employers can
prevent any problems related to Internet abuse in the workplace.

Which do you prefer to communicate by phone or face-to-face?

Initially, many people prefer to communicate with each other over the telephone due to
its convenience of time. We do not spend much time giving someone a call in place
of seeing them in person. This means of communication especially makes sense when we
would like to contact people in a long-distance such as our kindred in the hometown or
friends and relations in foreign countries. Also, making a telephone call is seen as a time-
effective way of communication in the business because keeping in touch with
customers, colleagues, or partners is too important to be neglected. Only if we are forced
to meet them in person; otherwise, telephone calls should be preferred.

Next, communication by telephone has become popular among people by means

of technology and the Internet. The breakthrough in technology has brought us an array
of portable devices to support a telephone call such as wireless telephones, screens
connected with phones for video calls. Besides, telephone users might make use of some
useful features accompanied by telephones like sending text or voice messages, looking
up directory. Also, most telephones these days have a variety of models, brands at
affordable prices for users.

Eventually, many companies and corporations use the telephone system as

an internal way of communication among staff. In large companies with multiple levels
of power, contacting each other face to face seems to be a difficult and inefficient
method. Instead, it would appear that each employee and department may communicate
with each other over the telephone to have a discussion on tasks, projects, contracts. In
the role of managers, this medium of communication is beneficial to our companies’
budget in lieu of holding meetings or conferences on a regular basis.

In conclusion, I tend towards the use of the telephone to communicate with people rather
than that of the traditional face-to-face method.

Many people enjoy spending time playing and watching sports. Why do you think sports are
important to people? Give specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

Sports are popular all around the world. People enjoy sports because sports bring several advantages to
people’s lives. Sports encourage people to get exercise, they provide opportunities for interacting with
others, and they give a sense of belonging to a group.

An interest in sports encourages people to get exercise. People who play sports get a lot of exercise.
People who are serious about their sport spend a lot of effort getting in good physical shape so that they
can play their sport well. Other people play sports just for fun, but they still get good exercise when they
play. Of course, some people just watch sports on TV, and that isn’t very good exercise. But sometimes
fans become motivated to imitate their
favorite athletes, and they try playing the sport themselves.

An interest in sports provides opportunities for interacting with others. When you play on a team, you
have to work with your teammates to play the game as well as you can. Or you may just interact with a
single opponent when you play a sport such as tennis. Even if you just watch sports, you have
opportunities to interact with other fans of your favorite teams.

An interest in sports gives a sense of belonging to a group. If you play on a team, then the team is your
group. You are also part of the larger group of people who enjoy playing that sport. If you enjoy
watching sports, you can feel that you are part of the group of fans who support your teams. You can also
feel pride in being a resident of the city that your favorite team represents.

Sports bring a lot of positive things to people’s lives. Sports encourage people to exercise,
to spend time with others, and to belong to groups. These are the reasons why sports are
important to people everywhere.
