C. Presenting Examples Instances of

the new lesson(EXPLORE)

Class, do you have any idea how can the

enrgy from volcanoes be tapped for human
used? (The students will respond)

Class do you think that there is an advantage

if our country is located at the Pacific Ring of
Fire? What is its advantage?
Yes ma’am there is. Our country has many
volcanic areas.
Correct. Since our country is located at the
Pacific Ring of Fire, it has many volcanic
areas that can be utilized for geothermal
energy production that can be tapped for
human use.

What is the importance of these volcanic

areas?
These areas serve as resource for production
of geothermal energy. .
Very nice. The volcanic areas serve as
resource for the production of geothermal
energy or heat energy.

Ok class, kindly describe a geothermal

energy?
Energy coming from volcanoes.

Well said. What else?

Produced deep in the earth’s core.

Very good. Any other answer?

Renewable source that can be harnessed to
generate electricty.

That’s right. The most impostant

characteristic of geothermal energy is that it
is a good source of renewable energy that can
generate electricity.

Now class, do you have any idea how this

geothermal energy can generate electricity?
Geothermal energy can generate elctricity
through geothermal power plant.
Very good! To generate electricty from the
earth’s core, a geothermal power plant is
needed.

Kindly tell something about geothermal

power plant?
The place where the conversion of energy
happens.
Thank you. Ok what else?
Use turbine, generators, transformers and
other generating equipment.

Very good. Geothermal power plant is used

in order to generate electricity by the use of
geothermal energy and most especially, it
does not burn fuel to generate electrivcity.

In what way does geothermal power plant

generates electricity?
The heat from within the earth changes water
into steam, which turns steam turbines that
generate electricty.

Correct. In a geothermal power plant, the

heat from within the earth changes water into
steam, which turns steam turbines that
generate electricty.

Can you name some examples of geothermal

power plants in our country?
Tiwi Geothermal Power Plant in Albay
Ok, correct! What else?
Mak-Ban (Makiling-Banahaw Power Plant in
Calawang, Laguna

Nice. Another?
Palinpinon Geothermal Power Plant in
Valencia, Negros Oriental
Thank you. What else?
Bac-Man (Bacon-Manito) Geothermal Power
Plant in Bacon, Sorsogon
Very good. Another answer?
Mt. Apo Geothermal Power Plant in
Kidapawan City, North Cotabato

Very well said. Those are some of the

geothermal power plants found in our
country.

Inside the earth, there is what we called

hydrothermal vent. What is a hydothermal
vent?
A naturally occuring occuring hot water and
steam.
That’s right! It is a fissure on the sea floor
and commonly found near volcanically active
places. This vent can be tapped by energy
conversion to generate electricty.

As I have mentioned earlier, the conversion

of heat energy to electrical energy happens in
a geothermal power plant. For you to have a
clear idea on how a geothermal power plant
generates electricity, let’s watch a short video
clip.

The short video that you have watched

discuss the step by step procedure on how a
geothermal power plant generates electricity.
Again, what is the first step on how to
generate electricity?
Using a high pressure, a production well is
drilled into a geothermal reservoir. Then hot
geothermal fluids flow through pipes.
That’s right. Wells are drilled deep into the
Earth to pump steam or hot water to the
surface. Right after this, what is the next
step?
When the fluid reaches the surface, the
pressure is decreased. This turns water into
steam.

Correct. When the water reaches the surface,

the drop in pressure causes the water to turn
into steam. What is now the role or fucntion
of the steam?
The steam provides energy to turn the blades
of the turbine which is connected to an
electric generator.
Great. The steam spins the turbine, which is
connected to a generator that produces
electricity. What is now the next step

Very Good. Turbine is used to drive the

electric generator to produce electric current,
What happen to the electric current produce
from the generator?
The mechanical energy generated from the
turning turbine is used to drive the electric
generator to produce electric current.
That’s right. The energy generated from the
turbine is used to produce electricity. And
finally what happen to the electric current
generated from the generator?
The electric current from the generator is is
sent to a transformer outside the power plant
to increase its voltage. The high voltage
curren is sent to transmission lines connected
to substations then distribute the electricty to
the consumer.
The electric current from the generator is is
sent to a transformer outside the power plant
to increase its voltage then current with high
voltage is sent to transmission lines
connected to substations then distribute the
electricty to the consumer..

Do you have any question on how electricity

is produced in the geothermal power plant? Is
everything clear?
None. Yes ma’am.
Now class, let’s move on to the different
types of geother power plant. What are these?
Dry Steam.

Correct. What else?

Flash Cycle Steam.

Correct. Another? Binary Cycle.

That’s right. Dry steam, flash cycle steam

and binary cycle are the types of geothermal
power plants.

Let’s discribe them one by one. Tell

something about dry steam power plant?
These types are the oldest types of
geothermal power plants. These plants use
dry steam that is naturally produced in the
ground. The steam passes from the
production well to reach the surface and
through a turbine to generate electricity.
After that, the steam is cooled and pumped
backunderground. This type however,
requires the highest temperature underground
Very Good. Dry steam power plant directly
utilizes steam from deep with in the earth to
make the turbine spin. This power plant is not The process is called pollination.
that common and it requires the highest
amount of temperature and it uses the least
amount of water to operate.

How about the flash cycle steam, what is its

characteristics? These types are the most common
types of geothermal power plants. These
plants use lower temperature than dry steam
plants. The water must be over 180°C, under
its own pressure, the water flows upwards
through the well. As the pressure decreases
some of the water “flashes” to steam, and
travels through the turbine to generate
electricity. The water that did not become
steam is cycled back into the well.
Correct! These types are the most common
types of geothermal power plants. These
plants use lower temperature than dry steam
plants. The water must be over 180°C, under
its own pressure, the water flows upwards
through the well.

Now tell something about binary cycle?

These types are expected to be the
most commonly used types of geothermal
power plants in the future. These plants
make use of lower temperature water
compared to the other two types of plants.
Very good! These types are expected to be
the most commonly used types of geothermal
power plants in the future. These plants
make use of lower temperature water
compared to the other two types of plants.
The water from the surface of the earth is
used to heat up another liquid is then used to
spin the turbine. Common liquids used are
pentane and isobutane due totheir low boling
temperature.

Is everything clear? Do you have any

question?
Yes ma’am. None.

Let’s check your work. Again, remember you

have to check your own paper for your
safety.

Good job! What do you think is the step in

generating electricty?
Hot water is pumped from deep underground
through a well under high pressure.
Very good! What is now the second step?
When the water reaches the surface, the
pressure is dropped, which causes the water
to turn into steam.

Very good! What is the next process?

The steam spins a turbine, which is
connected to a generator that produces
electricity.
Correct. What will be the next step?
The mechanical energy generated from the
turbine is used to drive the generator to
produce electricity.
Good observation. What is the final process?
The high voltage current is sent to a
transmission lines connected to substations
then distribute the electricity to consumers.

Kindly raise the hands of those who got a

perfect score?
The students will respond.
Good job for those who got a perfect score.
