“SING SONG”

LAYERS OF THE
ATMOSPHERE
ATMOSPHERE
• The layer of gases that
surrounds the planet and
makes conditions on Earth
suitable for living things.
• It is also divided into
several different
atmospheric layers
extending from Earth’s
surface outward.
TROPOSPHERE
• The layer of the
atmosphere that is closest
to the earth’s surface. 6-
10 km
• It is also the thinnest layer
of the atmosphere.
• This is where all the
weather occurs.
• The layer we live in.
STRATOSPHERE
• The second layer of the
atmosphere that is
located directly above the
troposphere. 10-50 km
above Earth.
• This is where the
maximum concentration
of ozone layer is found.
• Airplanes fly in this layer.
MESOSPHERE
• The thickest layer of the
atmosphere above
Stratosphere. 50 km - 80 km
• The layer which burns up
meteors and asteroids before
they are able to reach earth’s
surface.
• The coldest layer of the
atmosphere.
THERMOSPHERE
• The layer with the highest
temperature starting from
80km – 500km.
• The area which auroras can be
found.
• The thermosphere is home to
the International Space
Station as it orbits Earth.
AURORA BOREALIS
EXOSPHERE
• This layer separates the rest
of the atmosphere from outer
space. 500km to 1,000km
• The exosphere has gases like
hydrogen and helium, but they
are very spread out. There is a
lot of empty space in between.
There is no air to breathe, and
it’s very cold.
ATMOSPHERIC GASES
The gases that are found in the earth’s atmosphere

According to NASA, the gases in

Earth's atmosphere include:
•Nitrogen — 78 percent.
•Oxygen — 21 percent.
•Argon — 0.93 percent.
•Carbon dioxide — 0.04 percent.
•Trace amounts of neon, helium, methane, krypton and
hydrogen, as well as water vapor
ATMOSPHERIC GASES
Nitrogen & Oxygen

• These are the two most common gases

found in the atmosphere.
• They can be found throughout all the
layers.
ATMOSPHERIC GASES
Ozone
•a form of oxygen that is only
found in the stratosphere
ATMOSPHERIC GASES
Water Vapor & Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

• These are important gases for weather conditions.

• They are found in the troposphere where weather
occurs.
ATMOSPHERIC
TEMPERATURES
• The different temperatures of layers of the atmosphere.
• Differences in temperature are what separate each layer
in the atmosphere from the one above and/or below it.
ATMOSPHERIC
TEMPERATURES
In the troposphere:
•As altitude
increases,
temperature
decreases
ATMOSPHERIC
TEMPERATURES
In the stratosphere:
•The stratosphere is
cold except in its
upper region where
ozone is located.
ATMOSPHERIC
TEMPERATURES
In the Mesosphere:
•This is the COLDEST
layer in the
atmosphere.
ATMOSPHERIC
TEMPERATURES
In the
thermosphere:
•Even though the
air is thin in the
thermosphere, it is
very HOT.
ATMOSPHERIC
TEMPERATURES
•Beyond the thermosphere is the
exosphere which leads into outer space
where it is very cold, because there is little
to no atmosphere to absorb the Sun’s
heat energy.
