Beraquit Jenifer P. Palencia Joan O. Urban CODE SWITCHING: IMPLICATIONS ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING INTRODUCTION Background of the study
The use of the native language in
English as Second Language (ESL) classroom is a very controversial issue and it has been debated for a long time but has not been settled yet. Statement of the Problem This study aims to determine the implications of code- switching in second language learning. Specifically, the study sought to answer the following questions: 1. What are the perceptions of the students on the use of Code-Switching? 2. How does code-switching affect English language learning? 3. Why do teachers use code-switching in teaching English subject? METHODOLOGY Research Design • Qualitative • Quantitative Participants/Locale • BEEd - 3A • Three English teachers • CNSC – Abaño Campus METHODOLOGY
Data Collection
Methods and Instruments/Tools
• problem 1: survey – questionnaire – interview • problems 2 and 3: unstructured interview – audio recorder FINDINGS
On the perceptions of students on the use
of code-switching
82% of the respondents strongly believe
that the use of code-switching has a good effect in learning second language and only 18% believe that it has no good effect at all. On the effect of code-switching on English language learning
Code-switching serves as an instrument to
better understand the lesson in English. However, it can also be an interference in learning the language. On the reasons of teachers’ code-switching
The reasons why they do code-switching in
teaching English subject are to stress a point or to emphasize ideas to be conveyed, to give clarification, to explain things especially if there are words that are difficult to understand for the students and there are things that cannot be expressed in English. CONCLUSIONS • The students believe that code-switching has a positive impact in an ESL classroom because it helps the students easily understand the lesson and learn the language as well. • The teachers can use CS as a teaching technique but not frequently. • The reasons why the teachers do CS depend on the classroom situation. RECOMMENDATIONS • English teachers should consider the interest and wants of the students in terms of teaching strategies they think they will learn the language better. • Only the teachers can do code-witching in explaining difficult terms and the students should speak in English for them to practice the language and develop their fluency. • English teachers should only use code-switching when the students cannot understand the lesson not throughout the entire discussion. Thank you.
