What is Part of Speech?
◉A name given to a word based on
its job in a sentence.
Verb- Action/ state
◉ Every sentence in English must have a verb.
◉ Only verb words have tenses (To indicate time).

◉ Dylan plays tennis three times a week. (Action/ Physical)


◉ I am a teacher. (State/situation)
Linguistics
◉ I am going to the market (English).

Main verb & Auxiliary Verb

She is sleeping.
Main Verb- verb that expresses an action. It gives the major
information in terms of nature of the action.

Auxiliary Verb- tells us more about the time of the action.


Observe the following examples

Adjective-give info about noun/pronoun

◉ Adjective describes a noun or pronoun.


◉ Adjectives typically come before a noun or after a stative
verb, like the verb to be.
◉ Example:

early.
◎ It can be difficult to balance time to study and work
responsibilities.
Adverb- gives info about verb, adjective,
adverb
◉ Yesterday, we walked somewhat slowly in a very

Conjunction
◉ Conjunction is a word that joins two clauses.
◎ Coordinating conjunctions: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so

◎ Although he likes to watch movies, he does not like to go
to cinema.
Preposition
◉ Preposition comes before a noun or a noun phrase and links it to other parts of
the sentence.

◉ Examples: on, at, by, as far as, in addition to, as a result of, …
◉ I chose to interview people living in Selangor.
◉ Olivia sits next to Harry.
◉ I stopped the recording in the middle of the interview due to a low battery.
Interjection
◉ An interjection is a word solely designed to convey emotion or feeling.
◉ Example:
◎ Eww! There is cockroach in the box.
◎ Hello! How are you?
◎ Hooray! I got the job!
◎ Well, what did your mom say?
