LESSON 4

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN
QUANTITATIVE &
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

Prepared by
MRS. JULIE ANNE PORTAL - ODASCO
OBJECTIVES:

1. Defines Qualitative research & Quantitative research

2. Give the similarities and differences of qualitative

and quantitative research
SPOT THE DIFFERENCE!
SET A – Ninety-five of the examinees passed the licensure
exams.
Twenty pages of the book contain grammatically
incorrect sentences.
SET B – A big number of examinees passed the licensure
exams.
Several pages of the book contain grammatically
incorrect sentences.
2 BROAD CATEGORIES OF
RESEARCH

•QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

•QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
SIMILARITIES OF QUANTITATIVE &
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
BACHMAN (2009)
1. Empirical research is aimed at creating new knowledge.
2. Research creates knowledge by observing phenomena.
3. All entities of interest like attitude, motives and learning can be
inferred from observing what people say or do in a given setting.
4. All researchers are concerned about the universality of ideas or
expressing an idea in a general statement
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
• Is primarily an exploratory research
• Used to give an understanding of underlying reasons,
opinions and motivations
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
• According to Yin (2011):
1. Studying the meaning of people’s lives (under real world condition)
2. Representing the views and perspective of the people or participants of the
study in the results of the research mirror the values and meanings of the
people who live them
3. Research can be instances for developing new concepts
4. Striving to use multiple sources of evidence is better than relying on a
single source alone
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
- Used to quantify – that is to put numerical equivalent to findings
- It quantifies attitudes, behaviors, opinions and other defined variables
and generalize results from a large sample of population.
Particular, specialized and
therefore less generalizable
Consider the following statements and decide whether they are more
applicable to qualitative or quantitative research methodology:
Draw a – for Quantitative and - for Qualitative.

1.The aim is to describe, explain and predict.

2.The researcher uses a pre-designed questionnaire to obtain
numerical data.
3.The data consists of words
4.Narrow angle lens
5.Study the whole, not variables
