Introduction:
Corrosion is usually an electrochemical intreraction between a metalsand itsenvironment. [1]

What is Galvanic corrosion
Calvanic corrosion can be defined simply
as that corrosion that occurs as a result of
one metal being in electrical contact with
another in a conducting corrosive
.environment

The corrosion is stimulated by the

potential difference that exists between
the two metals, the more noble material
acting as a cathode where some oxidizing
species is reduced,the more active
matels,whish corrodes ,acting as the
anode.[2]

Mechanism of Galvanic corrosion
For the formation of a galvanic
corrosion,the following Components are
: required
.Cathode(Noble metal) -1
.Anode(Active metal) -2
.Electrolyte -3

Factors Affecting Galvanic Corrosion
The following factors significantly affect the
:magnitude of galvanic corrosion

Position of metals in the galvanic-1

:series
For galvanic corrosion the magnitude of
galvanic corrosion primarily depends on how
much potential difference exists between two
metals .for a particular environment, the metals
selected should be close to each other in
.galvanic series to minimize galvanic corrosion

The nature of environment-2 :
.The conductivity of electrolyte will affect the degree of attack -
Galvanic corrosion may be accelerated due to increased conductivity of the-
.electrolyte
Galvanic corrosion not affected by the velocity of the -
environment.
:Area and Distance Effects-3
:Effect of Area
The anodic to cathodic area is extremely important as the magnitude of
galvanic corrosion is seriously affected by it.An unfavorable area ratio consist
.of a large chatode and a small anode

figure (4) figure (5)

:Effect of Distance
It is a known principle that the solution conductivity varies inversely with the
length of the conduction path. The greatest galvanic damge is likely to
encountered near the junction of two metals and severity would be decreased
with increased lenght.[4]

?How to reduce galvanic corrosion
.Select metals as close together as possible in the galvanic series -1
.Avoid unfavorable area effect of a small anode and large cathode -2
Insulate dissimilar metals wherever practical(polymor or elastomer- -3
.based,gaskets and coating)
Eliminate electrolyte.[5] -4

.Galvanization-2
Galvanization is the process of applying
a protective coating to a metal by another
metal(less electrode potential).[6]
