REVIEW

Multiply the following whole

numbers:

1. (6)(1)
2. (12)(4)
3. (4)(3)
4. (5)(6)
5. (1/2)(0)
How do we define multiplication?

Multiplication is a repeated addition.

Example 1. Multiply: ( 5 ) ( -2 )
However, (5)(-2) = (-2)(5)
Therefore:
(-2)(5)= (-2) + (-2) + (-2) + (-2) + (-2) = -10
The result shows that the product of a negative
multiplier and a positive multiplicand is a
negative integer.
Rules in Multiplying Integers

(+)(+)=(+)

(+)(-)=(-)

(-)(+)=(-)

(-)(-)=(-)
Multiply the following integers mentally:

1.(5)(2) = 10 6. (-5)(3)(2) = -30

2.2. (-8)(-3) = 24 7. (-3)(-4)(-6) = -72

3.3. (-8)(4) = -24 8. (-1)(-1)(-1)(-1) = 1

4.4. (8)(-2) = -16 9. (6)(-1)(-3) = 18

5. (-7)(4)(-2) = 56 10. (0)(-8) = 0
