VOICE

• the quality of a verb that shows


whether the subject is the doer
or the receiver of the action.
ACTIVE VOICE
AND
PASSIVE VOICE

Active voice
• Active Voice is used to
indicate that the subject of
the sentence is the doer of
the action.
• Example:
S V O
The teacher gave the chocolate to
Maria.
ANOTHER EXAMPLES:
• Alexander Graham Bell invented
the telephone.
• The chef prepared a delicious
meal.
• A student wrote the winning
essay.
PATTERN FOR ACTIVE VOICE
• The pattern of an active voice is
subject (doer) +verb +object
(receiver)
PASSIVE VOICE
• Passive Voice is formed by
combining some form of the
verb be ( be, am, is, are, was,
were, being, been) with the
past participle of a given verb.
EXAMPLE:
• The chocolate was given to
Maria by the teacher.
ANOTHER EXAMPLES
• The winning essay was written by a
student.
• The Telephone was invented by
Alexander Graham Bell.
• A delicious meal was prepared by the
chef.
APPLICATION
• Rewrite the sentence changing the
voice from active to passive and
vice versa.
ACTIVE VOICE – PASSIVE VOICE
• Jamie bakes a lot of cookies.
• Many people admired Celine Dion.
• The pretty girl served the dress.
• The Doctor examines the patient.
• She will sponsor the education of many
poor students.
PASSIVE VOICE – ACTIVE VOICE
• The decision will be made by my boss.
• The change was proposed by us last
week.
• A message is delivered by John.
• The meeting shall be coordinated by
Dan in Paul’s absence.
• The shells were collected by James.
