Plant and Animal

Cells
Which is better or more important?
Animals or plants?
How do you say so?
SIMILARITIES

Plant and animal cells are very similar

because they are both eukaryotic cells.
They both contain membrane-bound
organelles such as the nucleus,
mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum,
Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, and
peroxisomes

DIFFERENCES

CELL WALL
ANIMAL CELL PLANT CELL
 No cell wall  With cell wall
Cellwall – located outside the cell
membrane
Made up of cellulose (polysaccharide
or long chains of carbohydrates)
Maintains the shape of the plant
Newly formed plant cells have primary
cell walls (thin and flexible)
Secondary cell walls are formed when
growth stops.
It is usually thicker and more rigid.
Secondary cell walls have cellulose
and lignin (primary component of
wood).
Plasmodesmata – channels in the cell
wall that allow exchange of
substances.
Some bacteria have cell walls made of
peptidoglycan (amino acids and
sugars)
Fungi, like mushroom, have cells walls
as well, made of chitin (nitrogen-
containing polysaccharide)
Some cells in plant roots have
extensions. These are called root hairs.
Roots hairs increase the surface area,
for more water and mineral absorption.
DIFFERENCES

PLASTIDS
ANIMAL CELL PLANT CELL
 No plastids  Present in three
types:
 Chloroplasts
 Chromoplasts
 Leucoplasts
 Plastids – organelles that contain pigments
 Chloroplasts – green plastids that contain
chlorophyll
 Chromoplasts – yellow or orange plastids that
are responsible for the color of fruits and flowers
 Leucoplasts – white plastids for storage in stem
Chloroplasts – site of photosynthesis
Double-membrane organelle

 Inmost mature plant cells, the vacuole occupies
the largest space (central vacuole). This is
surrounded by tonoplast.

cell from wilting)
