LESSON 8- THE TWO-SAMPLE MEAN
TEST
FORMULA

Where:
EXAMPLES
Solve by Stepwise Method:

I. Problem:
Is there a significant difference between the mean of the two groups?

II. Hyphothesis:
Ho: There is no significant difference between the mean of the two groups.
Ha: There is a significant difference between the mean of the two groups.
III.Level of Significance:
a= 0.01
α=0.01
a-1= 0.99
zc=±2.57
0.99/2 = 0. 495
Solve by Stepwise Method:

IV. Statistics: Two sample mean z-test

V. Decision Rule: If the z-computed value is greater than the z-tabular value, then reject the null hypothesis.
Solve by Stepwise Method:

VI. Conclusion: Inasmuch as the z-computed value of 11.95 is greater than the z-tabular value of
2.57 at 0.01 level of significance, so that, the null hypothesis is rejected. This means that the two
groups have different performances. It implies that the incoming freshmen in the College of
Marketing Management have performed better than the incoming freshmen in the College of
Information and Computer Technology in the entrance examination administered to them.
EXAMPLES

Example 2. A course in Physics is taught to 10 students by the traditional method. Another group of
11 students was given the same course by means of another methods. At the end of the semester, the
same test was administered to each group. The 10 students under method A made an average of 82
with a standard deviation of 5, while the students under method B made an average of 78 with a
standard deviation of 6. Is there a significant difference between the two methods? Use a 0. 05 level
of significance.
SOLVING BY STEPWISE METHOD

I. Problem:
Is there a significant difference between the two methods?

II. Hyphothesis:
Ho: There is no significant difference between the mean of the two methods.
Ha: There is a significant difference between the mean of the two methods.
III.Level of Significance:
IV. α= 0.01
t= ±2.093
SOLVING BY STEPWISE METHOD

IV. Statistics: Two sample mean t-test

a= 0.05

tc= +- 2.093
df= (10-1)+(11-1)
= 19

V. Decision Rule: If the t-computed value is greater than or less than the t-tabular value, then
reject the null hypothesis.
Solve by Stepwise Method:

VI. Conclusion: Since the t-computed value of 1.66 is not in the rejection region of the t-tabular
value of +-2.093, this means that the null hypothesis should be accepted. It implies that the
traditional and the other methods of teaching physics has no major differences between them.
