Warm-Up For this module, when we divide a polynomial by a binomial, we
Lesson obtain a quotient and a remainder.
1 ? We will use SYNTHETIC DIVISION to determine quotient,
remainder, and if the divisor is a factor of the dividend or the
2
polynomial function.
3 We write P(x) in the form,

4 ?𝑃 ( 𝑥 )=𝑑 ( 𝑥 ) ∙ 𝑄 ( 𝑥 ) + 𝑅 (𝑥 )

5 𝐷𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑠𝑜𝑟 𝑄𝑢𝑜𝑡𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑅𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟

6 ? Note: If the remainder is 0, then the divisor is a factor of the
dividend.

Warm-Up Steps in SYNTHETIC DIVISION
Lesson
? Step 1: Arrange the terms of the dividend according to the degree, beginning with
the highest. If a term is missing , place 0(zero) as a place holder.
1 ? Step 2: Write down all the numerical coefficients of the terms of the dividend. Write
down the number c in one of the corner of your work.
2 ? Step 3: Bring down the first number in the third row.
? Step 4: Multiply this number by c and write the result in the second row, second
3
? column.
4
Step 5: Add the two rows in the second column and write the result in the third row.
? Step 6: Repeat the steps 4 & 5 and continue until the n columns have been
5 exhausted.
? Step 7: Give the results. Place the variables with their respective coefficients.
6 Remember that the degree of the coefficients must be one less than the degree of the
dividend.
