Bayan LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: 1. Demonstrate understanding of the nature of qualitative research. 2. Describe the characteristics of qualitative research. 3. Identify the different types of qualitative research. Senior High School Dulong Bayan Qualitative research is a type of research that puts high value on people's thinking or point of view conditioned by their personal traits. It uses words rather than numbers as the unit of data analysis. Qualitative research usually takes place in social sciences, politics, economics, humanities, education, psychology, nursing, and all business-related subjects. 1. It focuses on human understanding and interpretation. 2. It is active, powerful, and forceful. 3. It has multiple research approaches and methods. 4. It follows the discussion 5. It contextualizes an individual's life. 6. It diversifies data in real-life situations. 7. It is presented in words and visuals. 8. It uses internal analysis. ADVANTAGES 1. It adopts a naturalistic approach to its subject matter. 2. It promotes a full understanding of human behavior in its natural setting. 3. It is instrumental for positive societal changes. ADVANTAGES 4. It engenders respect for people's individuality as it demands the researcher's careful stand toward people's world view. 5. It is a way of understanding and interpreting social interactions. ADVANTAGES 6. It increases the researcher's interest as it includes the researcher's background knowledge in interpreting verbal and visual data. 7. It offers multiple ways of acquiring and examining knowledge about something. DISADVANTAGE S 1. It involves a lot of researcher's subjectivity in data analysis. 2. It is hard to know the validity or reliability of the data. 3. Its open-ended questions yield “data overload” that requires long time analysis. DISADVANTAGE S 4. It is time-consuming. 5. It involves several processes, which the results greatly depend on the researcher's views or interpretations. Case Study It involves a long-time study of a person, group, organization, or institution. It seeks to find answers to why such thing occurs to the subject. Ethnography It is the study of a particular cultural group to get a clear understanding of its organizational set-up, internal operation, and lifestyle. Phenomenology It is the study of how people understand their experiences with the death of their loved ones, care for handicapped persons, and friendliness of people. Content and Discourse Analysis It requires an analysis of the substance or content, and/or the language structure in the medium of communication used by a person, group, organization, or institution. Historical Analysis It is the examination of primary documents to understand the connection of past events to the present time. Grounded Theory It takes place when you discover a new theory based on the data collection and analysis, or through observation that applies to your current study. IN DIFFERENT AREAS OF KNOWLEDGE Soft Sciences Qualitative research is normally used in soft sciences such as Business, Education, Anthropology, Economics, Philosophy, Politics, History, Law, Counselling, and other social science subjects. (Babbie, 2013) IN DIFFERENT AREAS OF KNOWLEDGE Humanities Qualitative research is also used in the field of Human- ities such as Fine Arts, Music, Literature, Drama, Dance, and other artistically- inclined subjects.
