SYSTEM
What is the Skeletal
System?
•The skeletal system is your body's
central framework. It consists of bones
and connective tissue, including
cartilage, tendons, and ligaments. It's
also called the musculoskeletal system.
•The skeletal system is made up of your
bones and creates the support structure for
the rest of your tissue and organs. Your
skeletal system gives your body shape,
supports your muscles, provides movement,
and makes red blood cells.
Why is the Skeletal System considered a system?

The Skeletal System is considered an organ

system. The system is composed of all the
bones of the body, cartilage, and ligaments.
The bones provide the main structural
support of the body and create protective
enclosures for the organs of the thoracic
cavity and the brain.
Are we born with 300 bones?

•A baby's body has about 300 bones at

birth. These eventually fuse (grow

together) to form the 206 bones that
adults have. Some of a baby's bones are
made entirely of a special material
called cartilage.
Why is it called the Skeletal
System?
•Bones provide a rigid framework,
known as the skeleton, that support
and protect the soft organs of the
body. The skeleton supports the
body against the pull of gravity.
The adult human skeleton usually
consists of 206 named bones. These
bones can be grouped in two
divisions: Axial Skeleton and
Appendicular Skeleton.
What are the 2 main parts of the
Skeletal System?
What is the Axial Skeleton
function?

•The function of the axial skeleton

is to provide support and protection
for the brain, spinal cord, and
organs in the ventral body cavity.
AXIAL SKELETON
-Your axial skeleton is
made up of the 80 bones
within the central core of
your body. This includes
bones in your skull (cranial
and facial bones), ears,
neck, back (vertebrae,
sacrum and tailbone) and
ribcage (sternum and ribs).
What is the Appendicular Skeleton
function?

•The Appendicular Skeleton

supports the attachment and
functions of the upper and lower
limbs of the human body.
APPENDICULAR SKELETON
-Your appendicular skeleton is made up of
everything else — the bones that attach (append)
to your axial skeleton. Your appendicular
skeleton includes the bones in your shoulders,
pelvis and limbs, including your arms, hands,
legs and feet. The appendicular skeleton is
comprised of the upper and lower extremities,
which include the shoulder girdle and pelvis.
The shoulder girdle and pelvis provide
connection points between the appendicular
skeleton and the axial skeleton to where
mechanical loads transfer.
What is the difference of Axial Skeleton and
Appendicular Skeleton?
Your Axial Skeleton is made up of the bones in your
head, neck, back and chest. While your Appendicular
Skeleton is made up of everything else the bones that
attach (append) to your Axial Skeleton. Your
Sppendicular skeleton includes the bones in your
shoulders, pelvis and limbs, including your arms,
hands, legs and feet.
