What is an
EARTHQUAKE? An earthquake
is caused by a
sudden slip on a
fault.
What is a
A fault is a fracture or

between two blocks of
rock. Faults allow the
blocks to move relative
to each other.

HOW STRONG IS THE
EARTHQUAKE?
An earthquake may be described in two ways:
intensity and magnitude.

The intensity of an earthquake gives us an idea of

how strong or weak the shaking is. The Philippine
Institute of Volcanology and Seismology
(PHIVOLCS) uses the following scale to describe
the intensity of earthquakes in the Philippines.

The intensity of an earthquake is determined by
observing the effects of the earthquake in different
places. Houses, buildings, and other structures are
inspected. People are interviewed about what they saw
(the cabinet fell over), how they felt (I was frightened),
or what they did (I ran out of the house).
CHECK YOUR
UNDERSTANDING
• When an earthquake occurs, where would shaking be greater?
Near the epicenter or away from the epicenter?

• Where would the damage be more? Near the epicenter or

away from the epicenter?

• Based on your answers to previous questions, where would

the intensity be higher? Near the epicenter or away from the
epicenter?
CHECK YOUR
When UNDERSTANDING
an earthquake occurs, different places will
have different intensities. That is because different
areas will experience different degrees of shaking.

Near the epicenter, shaking is great, so the intensity

there will be high. Away from the epicenter, the
intensity is less.
HOW STRONG IS THE
EARTHQUAKE?
An earthquake may be described in two ways:
intensity and magnitude.

Scientists have another way of describing how

strong an earthquake is. They measure the energy
that is released in an earthquake. This is called the
magnitude of the earthquake. Magnitude scales use
Hindu-Arabic numerals while intensity scales use
Roman numerals.

ACTIVE FAULT?
An active fault is one that has moved in
the past and is expected to move again.
Put in another way, an active fault has
generated earthquakes before and is
capable of causing more in the future.
