MY COMMUNITY AND

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
INTRODUCTION
The environment is where people live. It
influences the quality of life because it is the
source of basic needs. If the environment is not
protected, it may pose harm and threat to
people’s health.

This lesson will provide an understanding of the

roles and responsibilities of the people in the
community in preserving a healthy

environment.
Ways to protect the environment:
1. Practice proper waste management.
2. Do not perform activities that may damage or destroy
environment.
3. Keep things in their natural environment.
4. If going on a nature trip or visit, stay on trails.
5. Stay informed about current environmental issues and
problems.
6. Initiate actions that promote the protection of the
environment.

Solid Waste Management
• Refers to the collection, handling and disposal of wastes.
These wastes are brought to a landfill. A landfill is a
place where solid wastes are dumped in layers that form
a mountain like structure.

5
To practice solid waste management, the following
procedures must be followed:

Proper Disposal
• Biodegradable – this means that they decompose and disappear in
the environment naturally.

• Non-biodegradable – materials that not decompose easily.

6
Use of 5’rs
• Refuse – means avoiding accumulating wastes.
• Reduce – means minimizing wastes.
• Reuse – means using the same material for the same
purpose.
• Recycle - means turning wastes into another material for
another purpose.
• Rot – includes the process called composting. Composting
is using biodegradable materials as fertilizer for plants.
