Title: Testing for ions Date: November 19, 2023

Learning objective: Analyse experimental data to determine an unknown

compound
Do now
Success criteria

Explain how to test for anions • Investigate negative ions and some gases

• Describe how chemical tests can identify anions

Compare cations with anions
• Evaluate data to identify an unknown substance

List some examples of anions

Connect the learning
task: Identify the ions for
the 5 flame tests shown in
the diagram.

Challenge: If more than one ion was Keywords: Barium chloride and
present, justify why would you NOT be hydrochloric acid, silver nitrate and
able to identify the ions in that solution. nitric acid, lime water, pop test, splint
test, litmus paper
Gas tests
Oxygen gas – place a glowing splint into the gas.
Carbon dioxide – Bubble the gas through limewater.
Hydrogen – Place a lit splint into the gas.
Chlorine – Place a damp piece of litmus paper into the gas.

Extension: Explain why testing for gases can be dangerous

This week you have tested for:

Cations
Anions

Lets now interpret the results…

Task

 for exam style questions

 For practice

Challenge: Justify testing for ions in terms of accuracy, list some examples and ionic
formula
Self asses
Task Visit this website

Explain how to test for the following, and include what result you
would get:

1. Sodium chloride
2. Lithium bromide
3. Magnesium sulfate
4. Copper carbonate
5. Potassium iodide

Challenge: Compare the tests for the different oxidation states of iron
Task
Use ChatGPT to write you a question.

For example:

I am an Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry student currently

working at a grade 7, write me a question about chemical
analysis in terms of testing for cations and anions. Provide
some basic support.
Extended writing
A student was given a compound to identify.

The compound was either Sodium Iodide or Sodium Sulfate.

Describe the tests the student could use to identify this

compound, include the results for each test.

Extension: Justify the bonding between metals and non metals

Add silver nitrate and nitric acid, if a yellow precipitate forms
then this compound is sodium iodide. If not add barium
chloride and hydrochloric acid, if a white precipitate forms
then the compound is sodium sulfate.
